In the popular scientific literature the image of the 16th century hussars is limited to light armour warriors from the beginning of the century and Batorian hussars from the late 1570s. Recent scientific research fulfilled the gap between the second and third quarters of the 16th century. Nevertheless, studies devoted to protective arma¬ments are still not common, especially research devoted to Polish hussar armours from the mid 16th century. Research devoted to old Polish warfare techniques are to be based on written, iconographic and material sources. As far as the 40s and 50s are concerned, however, one faces exceptionally low level of materials as well as iconographic and museum records with determined chronology and origin are rare. Nevertheless, based on few and partial traces left by the Jagiellonian generation liv¬ing in the mid 16th century, the author attempted at re-establishing the model of the protective armour used by the hussar and the changes concerning the armaments of this type as regards cavalry at the turn of the first and second half of the 16th century.

В научно-популярной литературе образ гусарии XVI в. сводится к легково¬оруженным рацам начала столетия и гусарам Батория конца 70-х гг. Современ¬ные научные исследования заполнили пробел второй и третьей четвертей XVI в., но работы, посвященные защитному вооружению, прежде всего, происхож¬дению польского гусарского вооружения середины XVI в., – все еще редкость. Исследования старопольской военной техники должны базироваться на пись¬менных, иконографических и материальных источниках. По 40-м и 50-м гг. XVI в. имеется беспрецедентно мало источников, а иконографические и музейные предметы, строго датированные и известного происхождения, – большая ред¬кость. Несмотря на это, основываясь на немногочисленных следах, оставленных ягеллонским поколением, жившим в середине XVI в., автор попытался воссоз¬дать модель пластинчатого защитного вооружения гусарии, а также изменения в вооружении этого рода кавалерии на рубеже первой и второй половины XVI в.

The article attempts at presenting personal armaments of the Polish kings. The topic is a difficult one as the arms were not always signed, and the inventory of royal weapons were of a very general character. There is no doubt that Polish rulers had their own armaments. Most information concerns the armoury of King Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572) and the court courtiers working for the aforementioned monarch. The most famous ones were brothers, Florian and Walenty (Valentin) Sibenbürger from Nuremberg. The most significant dilemma as regards royal arms is connected with Augustus II the Strong and Augustus III. The arms signed with royal coat of arms, alongside the Wettin coat of arms, is presently located at Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden and is exhibited there at the permanent exhibition. The arms of our other rulers are currently located outside Poland and constitute the ornaments of the old weapons collection.

В статье описано личное оружие польских королей. Это сложная тема, т.к. на оружии нет клейма, а опись королевского оружия содержит информацию общего характера. Не вызывает сомнений, что у польских властителей были собственные арсеналы. Больше всего известно об арсенале Сигизмунда II Августа (1548–1572) и о придворных оружейниках, работавших на этого монарха. Самыми известными были братья Флориан и Валентин Зибенбургеры из Нюрнберга. Больше всего вопросов возникает по поводу оружия Августа II Сильного и Августа III. Оружие с королевскими гербами наряду с родовыми гербами Веттинов в настоящее время находится в постоянной экспозиции Государственных художественных собраний Дрездена. Оружие других польских королей также находится за пределами Польши и является украшением коллекций исторического оружия.
