This study is devoted to a married couple of entomologists: Dr. Ernst Urbahn (1888–1983) and Herta Urbahn-Schröer (1900–1983), whose personal and professional lives were heavily influenced by Pomerania and Stettin. Both the region and the city became places where their scientific careers flourished and where they had set on an important mission of creating an inventory of Pomeranian butterflies. Its outstanding finale was the monograph Butterflies of Pomerania with a comparative review of the Baltic Sea region (Die Schmetterlinge Pommerns mit einem vergleichenden Überblick überden Ostseeraum, 1939) – it remains to this day a flagship lepidopterological study of Pomerania. The article outlines the importance of both the Szczecin Entomological Society (Stettiner Entomologische Verein, 1837–1945) – under the auspices of which the Urbahns operated – and two related institutions: the Natural History Museum, located within the City Museum of Szczecin (Museum der Stadt Stettin – Naturkundemuseum, 1913–1945) and the Pomeranian Nature Society (Pommersche Naturforschende Gesellschaft, 1918–1945). It also unveils the post-war fate of collections accumulated over the decades (by various associations, museums and individuals), as well as that of their own private collection of butterflies. However, the core of the piece is a depiction of the couple’s fate who, after 1945, were compelled to restart their scientific path in the realities of the German Democratic Republic. Their life-science partnership appears to be – no doubt – a phenomenon in the male-dominated, entomological world of that time. And the fact that story about their lives is becoming popular in Szczecin and the Museum adds even more intriguing pages to the chronicle of the city and the region.

Niniejsze opracowanie zostało poświęcone małżeństwu entomologów – dr. Ernstowi Urbahnowi (1888–1983) i Hercie Urbahn-Schröer (1900–1983). Pomorze i Szczecin stały się miejscem rozkwitu ich naukowej kariery i pasji badawczej związanej z inwentaryzacją pomorskich motyli. Ich monografia – Motyle Pomorza z przeglądem porównawczym regionu Morza Bałtyckiego (Die Schmetterlinge Pommerns mit einem vergleichenden Überblick über den Ostseeraum, 1939) – do dziś stanowi sztandarowe opracowanie lepidopterologiczne dla Pomorza. W zakresie prac inwetaryzacyjnych przyrody Pomorza w artykule nakreślono również rolę Szczecińskiego Towarzystwa Entomologicznego (Stettiner Entomologische Verein, 1837–1945), pod auspicjami którego działali Urbahnowie, oraz dwóch powiązanych z nim instytucji – Muzeum Przyrodniczego, znajdującego się strukturze Muzeum Miasta Szczecina (Museum der Stadt Stettin – Naturkundemuseum, 1913–1945), i Pomorskiego Towarzystwa Przyrodniczego (Pommersche Naturforschende Gesellschaft, 1918–1945). Zaprezentowano też tużpowojenne losy gromadzonych przez dziesięciolecia zbiorów entomologicznych, zarówno tych związanych ze wspomnianymi towarzystwami i muzeum, jak i prywatnej kolekcji motyli Urbahnów. Przede wszystkim jednak przedstawiono losy pary naukowców, którzy po 1945 roku zostali zmuszeni do zbudowania na nowo swej ścieżki zawodowej i naukowej w realiach Niemieckiej Republiki Demokratycznej. Ich partnerski układ jawi się niewątpliwe jako ewenement w zdominowanym przez mężczyzn entomologicznym świecie tamtych lat. A fakt, że ich historia nabiera rozmachu w Szczecinie i tutejszym Muzeum, dopisuje frapujące karty w kronice miasta i regionu.
