This article focuses on the curtain installed in the Municipal Theatre in Kraków (now the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre) painted by Henryk Siemiradzki. The giant composition is an example of the unique formula of allegoric painting related to rebuses, which, as attested by the many drawings preserved in his sketchbooks, was the artist’s favourite kind of pastime. The identification of new iconographic sources (primarily Les Dieux Antiques by Stéphane Mallarmé) and the broadening of the context for those already known has made it possible to ask questions anew about the sources of creativity and imagination in late academic painting. The juxtaposition of Siemiradzki’s allegorical curtain manifesto with the rebuses he devised (contained in the sketchbooks preserved in the National Museum in Kraków) problematises the issue of the relationship between word and image which was characteristic of that period.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest namalowana przez Henryka Siemiradzkiego kurtyna Teatru Miejskiego (obecnie Teatru im. Juliusza Słowackiego) w Krakowie traktowana jako przykład szczególnej formuły malarstwa alegorycznego na swój sposób pokrewnej rebusom, które – jak świadczą liczne zachowane w szkicownikach przykłady – z upodobaniem uprawiał artysta. Zidentyfikowanie nowych źródeł ikonograficznych (przede wszystkim Les Dieux antiques Stéphane’a Mallarmé) i poszerzenie kontekstu dotychczasowych analiz pozwoliło na nowo postawić pytania o źródła twórczości i rolę wyobraźni w malarstwie późnoakademickim. Zestawienie alegorycznego programu kurtyny z konstruowanymi przez malarza rebusami (ze szkicowników zachowanych w Muzeum Narodowym w Krakowie) problematyzuje charakterystyczne dla epoki relacje między słowem a obrazem.

On the National Substance. The Role of the Diet of Galicia and Lodomeria and National Department in Preserving Jan Matejko’s Heritage

The paper discusses the relations between the Galician autonomy authorities, particularly those of the National Department, and Jan Matejko, the most prominent 19th-century Polish painter. These relations reached their climax when the Galician Sejm purchased a collection of items of national significance which belonged to the artist. Noticeable efforts were made during the establishing and subsidizing the museum in Cracow which was named after Jan Matejko. In addition, the paper describes the contribution of the National Department to the preparation of Jan Matejko’s funeral. The description relies on the material – previously not explored – stored in the State Archives of Lviv. The paper sheds a new light on the previously unknown facts illustrating the attitude assumed by the Galician autonomy authorities toward the Galician 19th-century national art.

Autor ukazał w pracy relacje zachodzące między władzami autonomii galicyjskiej, w szczególności między Wydziałem Krajowym a Janem Matejką, najwybitniejszym malarzem polskim XIX w. Punktem kulminacyjnym tych relacji był dokonany przez sejm galicyjski zakup pamiątek narodowych zgromadzonych przez artystę w ciągu swego życia, a po jego śmierci – udział władzy krajowej w zachowaniu w całości substancji artystycznej malarza w postaci powołania i dotowania muzeum jego imienia w Krakowie. Osobno ukazano wkład Wydziału Krajowego w przygotowanie pogrzebu Jana Matejki, opierając się o nieprzebadany dotąd materiał Archiwum Państwowego we Lwowie. Praca rzuca nowe światło na nieznane dotąd relacje między władzami autonomii galicyjskiej a sztuką narodową dziewiętnastowiecznej Galicji.
