Despite the fact that architect Edward Eber (1880-1953) left a rich and highly diversified legacy of outstanding works, his output has not been the subject of a historical analysis yet. Also the facts concerning his life were little known or uncertain. Eber was a top Warsaw architect of the first half of the 20th century. His work evolved from 19th century traditions burdened with historicism through grandiose tenement houses betraying the spirit of Berlin modernism to elegant functionalism of the late 1930s. 'Napoleon' Cinema at Plac Trzech Krzyzy and the adjacent complex of residential buildings, his last Warsaw project to be implemented, embodied all the latest technical solutions of those times. Victimized due to his Jewish roots, Eber left Warsaw together with his wife Alicja and went into hiding in Opatija. He died in Rome in 1953.
