Relationship: Russia – Europe is an important component of the political situation in contemporary Europe and the world. This also applies to Poland. Today, due to the war in Ukraine, this is an extremely topical subject matter. This is a question about Russia. Two positions have been formed in the tradition of culture and journalism. According to one, Russia is totalitarian country and an aggressor. And this is the „Russian soul”; Putin today. Russia is not changing. This means that there can be no acceptance of this state of affairs. It can only respond to „strenght” with „force”. According to the second position, such thinking means staying in the world of stereotypes and myths. There is no such thing as „Russian soul”. This means that Russia is not Putin. There is „Russia as such”. And we need to cooperate with this country. It is an anti-Putin opposition (M. Khodorkowsky, G. Kasparov, A. Navalny…). And today – as it was in the past – Poland remains in the circle of this dilemma.

В статье проводится мысль о том, что для современного исследования истории русской интеллектуальной культуры первой половины ХХ века особую роль играет реконструкция «архива эпохи», с помощью которой мы не только открываем для себя неизвестные страницы гуманитарной мысли, но и актуализируем творческое наследие философов и ученых-гуманитариев того времени. Продуктивность такого подхода демонстрируется на конкретном исследовании неизвестных переводов А. Мицкевича в Советской России 1930-х годов.

The article advances the idea, that for modern research of the history of Russian intellectual culture of the first half of the XX century the reconstruction of the Epoch Archive has a special meaning, and with the help of this reconstruction we not only discover for ourselves the unknown pages of humanity, but we also update the creative heritage of the philosophers and humanitarians of the time. The efficiency of such an approach is demonstrated by a particular research of the unknown translations of Adam Mickiewicz in Soviet Russia of the 1930-ies.

W artykule wyrażono myśl, iż dla współczesnego badania historii rosyjskiej kultury intelektualnej 1. poł. XX wieku szczególną rolę odgrywa rekonstrukcja "archiwum epoki", dzięki której możliwa jest odsłona nieznanych do tej pory kart myśli humanistycznej, jak również aktualizacja twórczego dziedzictwa filozofów i humanistów owych czasów. Podejście to zilustrowano na przykładzie przekładów Adama Mickiewicza w Rosji Radzieckiej lat 30. ubiegłego wieku.

The author analyzes Kazimierz Świegocki’s book with respect to the most important changes in modern humanities – especially to the anthropological turn, that is the literary scholars’ interest in the methods of cultural as well as comparative studies. Kłobukowski interprets Świegocki’s comparative study on two planes – as an intriguing and sometimes innovative study of great Polish poets who participated in creating the literary tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries, and also as an attempt at building anthropology of literature using modern methods, but also deeply rooted in the philological tradition – based on the concept of subjectivity, whose vision may be reconstructed on the basis of the literary text. The reviewer thinks that the construction of the argument based on juxtaposing two different types of poetical anthropology that may be recognized in Mickiewicz’s and Norwid’s work is one of Świegocki’s most interesting ideas. Świegocki’s proposition seems advisable both to those who study Romanticism, and to theoreticians of literature. A vigorous and elegant style of the book makes it also recommendable to students, or even to people who are not “professionally” connected with literature.
