Ludwig Wittgenstein's and John L. Austin's studies have offered a new concept of language. Should one, in the light of 'The Philosophical Investigations and How to Do Things With Words', limit himself or herself exclusively to investigating the manner in which feelings are spoken about, whilst remaining tacit as to the very nature of feelings? Can love be talked about using the language of analytical philosophy? The author's quest is one for giving replies to those queries; to this particular end, declaration of love is made subject to detailed analysis from the standpoint of Wittgenstein's concept of linguistic games and Austin's speech act theory.

The article identifies and further specifies the basic features of Thomism, analytical philosophy, and analytical Thomism. It draws upon the respective encyclicals on this topic, viz. Aeterni Patris and Fides et ratio, as well as upon certain other studies (Haldane, Poiuvet, Berti). It does not, however, consider these studies as fully sufficient, and thus proposes the following features of analytical Thomism: (1) openness to analytical thinking; (2) openness towards contemporary findings in the natural sciences and their philosophical interpretation; (3) openness to solving theological issues, particularly in Catholic theology; (4) the adoption of the metaphysical core of Aquinas’s doctrine based on the act of being (which guarantees metaphysical realism) as well as the determination of the content of further basic metaphysical concepts and principles.

Intuition belongs to the most prominent concepts of philosophical methodology. In my paper I put forward some crucial ideas related to the notion of intuition. Firstly, I sketch a general picture of intuition in philosophy. Secondly, the main debates about intuition in analytical philosophy are presented and discussed. Finally, it is argued that the aforementioned debates are not clear about the epistemic and explanatory status of intuition. My own view is that intuition may be a very useful power for initiating philosophical cognition, but at the same time it does not look promising when it is interpreted as a cognitive power for justification of philosophical knowledge.

In this article I trace the development of the concept of the continuum from Eudoxus to Brouwer from the perspective of analytical philosophy or, more particularly, from the perspective of two turns that analytical philosophy has brought with it. The first of these is the linguistic turn which states that if we wish to answer questions like 'what sort of class of objects is such and such?' we must first of all investigate the relevant linguistic context and, in particular, we must describe the admissible representations. Only in establishing the criterion of identity do we establish names of something-that is of corresponding objects. The second turn is the pragmatic turn which responds to the above questions always with an eye to how the given expressions (representations) are used in the framework of a certain stable linguistic praxis. In relation to arithmetic we thus take as our starting point Frege's characterisation of a cardinal or real number as a response to the question 'how much of what?', or 'how great is the given quantity in relation to a unitary quantity?'

The paper deals with the very idea of distinction between analytical and continental philosophy, so it is primarily methodological. The aim is to criticize this division. Criticism is conducted from the point of view of analytical philosophy. The arguments are of three kinds: a) factual – evidence from the history of contemporary philosophy, pointing to analytical philosophers working on the continent (Frege, Carnap, etc.) and at the same time to non-analytical philosophers outside the continent (American pragmatism, etc.); b) methodological – it is a division of contemporary philosophy, is it complete, exclusive, what is the criterion of division? It is divided according to both geographical and systematic criteria. This will point out the illogicality of the division itself; c) power – the division is conducted by analytical philosophy as a manifestation of its hegemony, it is actually a division of analytical vs. non-analytical philosophies. Thus, in conclusion, I will focus on the possibility and necessity of dividing philosophy, such as movements, disciplines, philosophers, as well as the purposes – educational, research, etc. The division of philosophy according to problem areas is considered less misleading.

The paper is devoted to the problem of difference without distinction between the analytical and continental philosophy which cannot be formulated at the level of certain metaphilosophy but remains absolutely real and sufficiently perceptible at the level of the method used by philosophers in studying philosophy. Being far from the position of oikumenism and the idea of overcoming the distinctions of two traditions in post-analytical philosophy, the author emphasizes that, in spite of the divergences in education, style and interests which tend, to a more or less extent, to the history of philosophy, one gains an impression that the question is in two different disciplines which difference is reduced to the variation in the rules of the same (philosophic) game. The author does not think that the dialogue between representatives of those positions, which retains the latter unchanged, may be useful and will favour the rapprochement of the two philosophic traditions.

The paper is devoted to the study of controversy of the analytical and continental philosophy in contemporary France. Being far from becoming a problem of history, this controversy in the contemporary French philosophy gains the form of debate of post-modernists (J. Derrida, F. Liotard) and French admirers of the analytical philosophy (J. Bouveresse, P. Angel, S. Logier). The paper investigates the historical origins of the controversy reaching the first half of the 20th century, when the basic subjects of French philosophy were formed as such that excluded any attention to the problems raised by the English-Austrian and then by the English-American thought. The French philosophy has gone through the 'linguistic change' only in the 60's of the 20th century, but semiologic version of the language philosophy differed radically from the semantic and further linguistic philosophy developed by the analytic tradition. The authoress studies the attempt of French philosophers of the analytical trend of the 80-90's of the 20th century to renounce the ideas of philosophy and style of the thought used by the 'vanguard philosophers' of the 60-70's and the differences between the 'continental' and analytical philosophy articulated by them which rather belong to the stylistic level (clearness, argumentation, dialogue), than the content level of the theses and methods.

The first phase of analytical philosophy dates from the eighties of 19th century to the late twenties of 20th century. Frege, Moore, Russell, Wittgenstein then wrote their eminent works. The structure, function, and meaning of language were also the subject of investigation of Franz Brentano and his pupils, especially Marty, Twardowski, Meinong, and Husserl. The linguistic turn in philosophy would not have been possible if it had not been for the broad influence of Brentano's ideas. In this context one may speak of the English-Austrian School. The paper takes into account Brentano's theory of meaning and his important successors.
