In the article, three basic types of strategies for sociological theory construction as well as main features of model-based strategy are briefly introduced. The main attention is payed to the road passed by contemporary analytical sociology in the field of theory construction. Theoretical models (drawn from R. Boudon´s work) based upon social mechanism and providing explanation of social phenomena or processes, correspond to the first step on the road. In the next section, the transitional stage from theoretical models through classic formal models to agent-based models is mentioned. As a common example, the reproduction of social inequalities (Matthew effect and cumulative (dis)advantages) which constitutes the substantive background linking classic formal models to agent-based model was exploited. The final part is dealing with the construction of agent-based model of deference exchanges (Manzo & Baldassarri). Heuristic and methodological problems are emphasized.

In the article, the fundamental principles of analytical sociology are briefly introduced. As underlined, the contemporary analytical sociology based on social mechanism concept is closely connected to multi-agent (or agent-based) modelling. Three methodological inspirations which can be found in contemporary analytical sociology are discussed. The first one is dealing with Merton´s interpretation of Middle range theory. According to Hedström and Udehn, there are two basic dimensions of MRT: dimension of generality (explanandum) and dimension of isolation (explanans). In the next part, the model construction of theory is discussed and compared to the strategy of hypothetic-deductive theory construction. Finally, the issue of explanation based upon social mechanism is analysed. There are two fundamental approaches to solve the issue which can be found in the analytical sociology. Bunge´s approach (How does it work?) is compared to Boudon´s one (Why does it work?). The social mechanism underlying the social control process is introduced to demonstrate the idea that the answer to the question “how does it work?” can provide a non-trivial though not final explanation of social phenomena.

In the last two decades, the sociology of religion in Czech Republic has produced a great deal of empirical analyses of Czech religiosity, revealing a high level of irreligion and distrust to (traditional) religious institutions in the Czech society. However, most of them lack in explaining the identified phenomena and do not go beyond the level of description and/or historicization. As suggested by the author, Czech sociology of religion has been in short supply of theory that might help to achieve a deeper understanding of the factors that lie behind the observed tendencies. The paper suggests that analytical sociology, with its central concept of social mechanisms, can be viewed as one of possible remedy for the perceived deficit.

The research works which have considerable shortcomings regarding their theoretical and empirical content as well as their analysis systematics are still not rare in sociology. The author thinks that such state of affairs can be overcome by virtue of orientation to “logos”, which takes its shape in the explanatory-analytical scheme called in international sociologic slang the Coleman’s bath. Development of the analytical paradigm promises to overcome eclecticism and dissociation in sociological theory and gives the basic conceptual apparatus for accumulating the empirical results, being in consecutive relation with each other. This will help sociologists to get rid of the widespread inclination to the descriptive and normally charged macro-analysis, often leading to quasi-sociological perspectivism. To illustrate some positions of the explanatory-analytical paradigm the author makes a critical analysis of two articles published in the journal Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing in 2010 and 2011.
