Contemporary Arab women poets deal in their works with the tanatic subjects as a continuation of the old Arabic poetess Al-Khansa tradition. The death motifs in their poetry can be divided into the three groups. The first group consists of the motifs which exemplify the attitude of the individual towards herself which means the reflection on the nature of existence and the inevitability of the passing away and as a consequence resulting from it the attitudes towards own death. The second group embraces the threads characterized by the attitude of the individual towards the group. The authoress classified here the war motif and connected within it strongly the thread of the heroic death. There is also a third group which embraces the motifs of grief, sorrow and despair after the loss of the close one which represent the attitude of the individual towards the individual. These we can find mainly in the elegies.

The geographical work of A l - I d r i s i, 'Nuzhat al-mushtaq fi khtiraq al-afaq', written for King Roger II, is well known, but its second treaty, the 'Uns al-muhadj wa-rawd al-furadj', it only came under scrutiny twenty years ago. A l - I d r i s i made the plan of the 'Uns' like that of the 'Nuzhat'. The world is divided into climates, with each climate being divided again into ten sections. The study of some parts of the 'Uns' shows that it is not a simple summary of the 'Nuzhat', but a rewriting with some additions, especially for Africa and the Meditteranean Europe. Poland and the Central Europe is situated in the third section of the sixth climate. But in this case, the text and the map are composed of a geographical material extracted from the 'Nuzhat', without real new information.

The article is devoted to the history of Russian Empire's presence in the Holy Land. It discusses the diplomatic efforts, which had been made by the tsarist Russia to gain influences in Palestine through such organisations as the Russian Spiritual Mission, the Palestine Committee and the Orthodox Palestine Society. The latter - according to its statutory objectives - organised the system of hospitals and schools for local people in Syria and Palestine. The best school graduates received grants to study in Russia where they had an opportunity to continue their education. Some of them never came back to their home country and spent the rest of their lives in Russia. Both Bandali al. Jawzy and Taufik Jubra'il Kazma, as well as Kulthum Bint Nasr Awda were related to many Russian (and then Soviet) academic institutions. The subsequent part of this article discusses the often uneasy life of those people in the new homeland and their scientific work.

Israel’s military victory over the Arabs in June 1967 provoked a widespread reaction and a search for a way out throughout the Arab world and, in the case of Syria, led to the overthrow of the ruling regime. In the autumn of 1970 Ḥāfiẓ al-Asad seized power, and his regime represented the arrival of new elites from rural backgrounds to replace the traditional urban politicians and representatives of business circles. It was an authoritarian regime whose power base was the army and the Bac th Party. The sole ruler wielded absolute power and became the object of a personality cult. The regime adopted socialist-type economic policies and advocated egalitarian reforms.

The coming to Power of Lyndon B. Johnson and the expulsion of Nikita Khruschev from the Kremlin brought about important changes in the relationship between the superpowers and the Arab states. The period witnessed a steady deterioration of both inter-Arab and US-Arab relations. By the end of 1964 US-Egyptian relations reached a crisis. Several developments led to this point: 1. further Egyptian economic and military dependence on the Soviet Union; 2. Egypt’s involvement in the Arab-Israeli conflict; 3. Egyptian military and political support of the rebels in the Congo; 4. Egypt’s armed presence in Yemen; 5. the fire of the Kennedy Library in Cairo; 6. US economic threats against Cairo. The calm that marked the period was deceptive; the storm was never far away.
