The paper analyzes the financial instruments addressed to area payments through the perspective of the Multiannual Financial Framework. The study covered five financial perspectives. The analysis was carried out in three groups of member states, with grouping being based on periods of membership of the EU. In addition, the current levels of payments and the outlook for 2020 have been presented against the background of the MFF. The results of the studies have shown that periods of membership in the EU and the maintenance of two direct payments systems have affected the differentiation of the level of area payments. In the current financial perspective (2014-2020), in the pursuit of convergence, the budget for the EU-15 was reduced and the budget for NUE-12 increased. Still EU-15 countries with 72.1% of the UE’s agricultural holdings were involved in a budget at the level of 74.7% (289.0 billion euros) while the NUE-12, which has 27.9% of the agricultural land, has a share of 25.3% (97.6 billion euros). Compared to the previous financial perspective (2007-2013), financial support was increased for the new member states.
