The aim of this article is to present the functioning of the virtual source in classic role-playing games’ guide books. The presentation is based on a discussion of the relationship between the author and the source of a text. Any book as an act of communication is the result of the cooperation of writers, illustrators and publishers, so it is necessary to make a distinction between the terms “author of the book” and “author of the text”. The function of the source is fulfilled mostly by authors of text. Classic role-playing games’ guide books are usually joint works. The authors of the text are also the creators of the classic role-playing game system in question. They present the virtual source, marked with the use of the following forms: the exclusive or inclusive “we” and the “me” of the authors, which are usually found in meta-texts.
