The paper presents basic dilemmas of computer-aided education (CAE). The relations between education and modern technologies - mainly information technology - are described. Computer-aided education is the plane of interaction between the world of modern technologies and somehow conservative education. The main source of the described dilemmas is an enormous rate of changes in technique and technology which interfere with education of the human beings whose mind, nature and abilities change much slower. The computer-aided education is an interdisciplinary issue, involved in many various contexts, i.e. psychological, social, historical, political and cultural ones. The paper describes attempts of new methodological solutions, the problem of student's subjectivity, and the new role and necessary competencies of a teacher in the information society. The pedagogical consequences of audio-visual culture (i.e. image culture) origin are presented. Axiological problems and menaces are given special attention. Solving the dilemmas presented in the paper will contribute to better, more effective and meaningful usage of computers and the vast possibilities offered by the information technologies.
