Research issues and academic achievements of the faculty of the Department of Pedagogy and Teaching at Poznań University in 1919–1939 on the centennial of the establishment of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (1919–2019). In its early days, Poznań University attracted a large number of researchers representing many disciplines of science but prevailing humanities. Poznań was a centre of very dynamic research into pedagogy and psychology. Initially, the Department of Pedagogy and Teaching at Poznań University focused on just a few research fields and areas. In the lead were issues related to the theory of upbringing, educating adults and the history of upbringing. In the local Department of Pedagogy and Teaching, a number of contributions was made to teaching and the methodology of some teaching subjects. In the Interwar Period, the following research areas were pursued by the pedagogy teachers at Poznań University: Antoni Danysz’ progressive-national trend referring to the ideological traditions of the Revolutions of 1848; Ludwik Jaxa-Bykowski’s nationalist-anthropological trend resulting from nationalist conflicts and efforts to reinforce the nation with special emphasis placed on the first decade of Poland’s independence; Marian Wachowski’s nationalist-imperialistic trend based on German philosophical pedagogy.

The subject of the article is professor Stanisław Michalski – a pedagogue by education and practice, researcher of the history of education, and supervisor of numerous historians of education. The aim of the publication is to present Michalski in the context of his scientific and organizational achievements, related primarily to the creation of a separate unit dealing with the history of education at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, the Department of the History of Upbringing, and of which he became the first Head. The genesis and motives for establishing this research unit, as well as the first period of its activity, are described. The main areas of his research interests are presented, focusing on the views of outstanding social and educational activists of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of agricultural education and the education of rural youth, the history of the professional teaching movement and teacher education in Poland, as well as his clearly defined views on the methodology of the history of education. The professor’s activity in the academic bodies of AMU, his extensive experience as a promoter, as well as his cooperation with academic centers from all over Poland were marked. The factual method was used, i.e. a critical analysis of source materials (archival and printed), and numerous studies on the subject matter were performed.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest postać profesora Stanisława Michalskiego – z wykształcenia i praktyki pedagoga, badacza dziejów oświaty, opiekuna naukowego wielu historyków wychowania. Celem publikacji jest przedstawienie Michalskiego w kontekście jego dorobku naukowego oraz organizacyjnego, związanego przede wszystkim z utworzeniem na Uniwersytecie im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu odrębnej jednostki zajmującej się dziejami oświaty – Zakładu Historii Wychowania, którego był pierwszym kierownikiem. Opisano genezę i motywy powołania zakładu oraz pierwszy okres jego działalności. Ukazane zostały główne obszary zainteresowań naukowych Michalskiego: sylwetki i myśl pedagogiczna wybitnych działaczy społecznych i oświatowych XIX i XX wieku, historia oświaty rolniczej i edukacja młodzieży wiejskiej, dzieje zawodowego ruchu nauczycielskiego i kształcenie nauczycieli w Polsce oraz wyraźnie dookreślone poglądy na metodologię historii wychowania. Zaznaczono aktywność profesora w gremiach UAM, bogate doświadczenie w roli promotora, a także współpracę z ośrodkami badawczymi z całej Polski. Wykorzystano metodę faktograficzną, tj. dokonana została krytyczna analiza materiałów źródłowych (archiwalnych i drukowanych), a także licznych powstałych opracowań w badanej tematyce.

The 100th anniversary is an occasion to recall and commemorate all the major events that occurred at the University and the Faculty, and the many achievements and accomplishments that have shaped the current position of both institutions. Humans tend to remember especially those events in which they participated personally. In my case, the first of such events are connected with my studies at the Faculty, then there are the most important events that occurred during my employment at the Faculty as an academic teacher, and lastly the extra-university events in which I participated as a member of the academic community. This report describes some of the events which occurred during my studies, between 1956 and 1961. These are related to the studies themselves, as well as to activities undertaken in student research groups and student organizations. Other memories cover more than 63 years of my relationship with the University and the Faculty as an academic teacher, and in particular the period 2002–2008, in which I served as Dean of the Faculty, and they highlight the satisfaction and the pride I feel from being a member of the University community and the Faculty with their 100-year history, whose rank and achievements are chiefly due to eminent, outstanding professors who have through all those years greatly contributed to this position.

Jubileusz 100-lecia skłania do tego, aby przypomnieć i utrwalić wszystko to, co wypełniało działalność Uniwersytetu i Wydziału, ich bogate osiągnięcia i dorobek, które ukształtowały ich rangę. Ludzką właściwością jest wspominanie zwłaszcza takich zdarzeń, w których uczestniczyło się osobiście. W moim wypadku są to zwłaszcza zdarzenia związane ze studiami Wydziale, potem najważniejsze zdarzenia związane z funkcjonowaniem na Wydziale w charakterze nauczyciela akademickiego oraz te pozauniwersyteckie zdarzenia, które były moim udziałem z tytułu przynależności do akademickiej społeczności. Niniejsza relacja niniejsza obejmuje niektóre zdarzenia z okresu studiów odbywanych w latach 1956–1961, związane z przebiegiem studiów, ale także z działalnością w studenckich kołach naukowych i w organizacjach studenckich. Dalsze wspomnienia dotyczą ponad 63-letniego okresu związków autora z Uniwersytetem i Wydziałem w charakterze nauczyciela akademickiego, w tym zwłaszcza okresu pełnienia w latach 2002–2008 funkcji dziekana Wydziału. Podkreślono satysfakcję i dumę autora z tytułu jego związków z Uniwersytetem i Wydziałem, których ranga i osiągnięcia są efektem ich 100-letniego funkcjonowania, co jest zwłaszcza zasługą wybitnych profesorów, którzy w tym okresie kształtowali tę rangę.

The author presents the academic achievements of Professor Józef Dobosz, a medieval historian from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, formerly a student of Professor Brygida Kürbis. He also presents the successive stages of his academic career, the main directions of his research, his most important publications and organisational activity. Professor Dobosz’s contribution to the development of relations between Polish and Czech historical milieus is also highlighted.
