Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje zmiany struktury gospodarczej 10 małych miast, położonych w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie strefy wewnętrznej Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej. W pierwszej części autor koncentruje się na analizie potencjalnych funkcji małych miast, następnie przedstawia ich podstawową charakterystykę, a w zakończeniu podejmuje próbę oceny zmian sektora usług w małych miastach w latach 2002‒2009, stanowiących bezpośrednie zaplecze Górnośląskiego Związku Metropolitalnego.

The processes of metropolisation of the urban agglomeration wo rk, in favour of energising the spatial and economic changes in small towns located in its oute r zone, as well as in favour of the development of their specialized functions. The rate of the transformation of the functional structure of small towns located in metropolitan areas depends on many factors, so the formation processes of local poles of service and economic activity can take place in different ways and in different locations. The aim of the article is to present changes of the economic and functional structure of 10 cities having a population of less than 20 thousand, placed in the direct neighbourhood of the inner zone of Upper - Silesian Agglomeration. The following centres belong to this group: Bieruń, Imielin, Lędziny, Łazy, Pyskowice, Radzionków, Siewierz, Sławków, Sośnicowice and Wojkowice. The first part of the paper attempts to present the potential functions of small towns in the outer zone of the urban agglomeration, which is undergoing the metropolisa tion process. Later sections of the study present the basic characteristics of the small towns located in the immediate vicinity of the inner zone of the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and then attempts to analyse the changes in the service sector in small towns which constituted a direct base for the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union between 2002 and 2009.

The paper is devoted to the issues concerning the conditions and potentialsfor development of a creative economy - based on culture sector - in cities and towns ofthe Upper Silesian Agglomeration. It refers to the aspects like: broad and narrow definition of a creative economy, prospective and retrospective presentation of the Upper Silesian Agglomeration as well as its institutional potential along with existingstructure of the creative economy. Cases of Katowice as a musie city and Bytom as a stage and outdoor entertainment town were also discussed.

Artykuł jest poświęcony wynikom badań dotyczących warunków i potencjałów kształtowania i rozwoju kreatywnej gospodarki opartej na sektorze kultury w miastach Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej. Opracowanie obejmuje następujące aspekty: przedstawienie i analiza szerokiej i wąskiej definicji kreatywnej gospodarki, retrospektywne i prospektywne ujęcie Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej oraz jej potencjału instytucjonalnego i struktura sektorów gospodarki kreatywnej. W opracowaniu szczegółowo omówiono przypadki dwóch miast: Katowic i Bytomia. Katowice przedstawiono jako miasto kultury wysokiej i przemysłu muzycznego, Bytom natomiast jako miasto widowisk scenicznych i plenerowych.

The article focuses on the development of the modern business services sector in post-industrial cities. Firstly, a definition of the business services sector is introduced, including location factors influencing foreign investments as well as the effects of such investments on local and regional economy. Secondly, there is presented the development of the modern business services sector in Poland, the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and Katowice, and the process of structural changes which were implemented in Katowice in order to attract the projects from modern business services sector. Then, the case studies are discussed as followed: IBM delivery centre, Rockwell automation and capgemini centre. an analysis is presented, dealing with the question which of the location factors described in the analytical part mattered the most in these cases. In the end, the sector impact on the regional and local economy of Katowice and Upper Silesian Agglomeration is outlined.

Artykuł skupia uwagę na rozwoju sektora nowoczesnych usług biznesowych w miastach poprzemysłowych. Po pierwsze, wprowadzono definicje sektora nowoczesnych usług biznesowych wraz z określeniem czynników lokalizacji determinujących inwestycje zagraniczne, jak równie wskazano na efekty tego rodzaju inwestycji w ramach gospodarki lokalnej i regionalnej. Po drugie, zaprezentowano poziom rozwoju sektora nowoczesnych usług biznesowych Polsce, Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej oraz w Katowicach, a także proces zmian strukturalnych zachodzących w Katowicach w celu przyciągnięcia projektów sektora nowoczesnych usług biznesowych. kolejno zaprezentowano studia przypadków: IBM delivery centre, Rockwell automation and capgemini centre. Zaprezentowano analizę, które z czynników lokalizacji scharakteryzowane w części analitycznej w największym stopniu dopasowane są do analizowanych przykładów lokalizacji działalności sektora nowoczesnych usług biznesowych. Na zakończenie zarysowano wpływ analizowanego sektora na regionalną i lokalną gospodarkę Katowic oraz Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej.
