Since 1995, along with the rise of the Internet, traditional daily papers have been experiencing a real revolution. There are three stakes in this game. The first is economic: how to ensure their survival, which is dependent on finances? The second is ethical: how to guarantee proven valuable information in the net? The third is political: how to ensure equal access to complete, reliable, and pluralistic information, which is the main pillar of democracy? This article offers an analysis of answers to those questions, contained in the newspapers of the Western democracies, particularly the American press.

Already in the first weeks of Poland’s independence the Polish government had to face a series of anti-Jewish incidents on territories under its authority. The article seeks to ascertain whether the Jewish question in Poland was present in the American press, which after the First World War was becoming increasingly influential in the world in connection with the USA’s economic and financial power. The author determines which riots were reported in the American press and how objective the accounts were. Attention is paid to the reaction of the Jewish and Polish organizations in the United States to the reports from Poland and its descriptionin the American press. The last important issue dealt with in the article is the time scope of the description of the anti-Jewish incidents in Poland. All these detailed questions allow to grasp the interesting problem of the creation of th eimage of reborn Poland across the Atlantic. The image abroadis an important issue for every country, but for independent Poland, which was establishing its borders and sovereign existence after a war that had ruined its economic basis, this was an issue that could determine the country’s future destiny as the United States and other Entente powers had a decisive voice at the Peace Conference in Paris.

The potato blight that struck Ireland in 1845 led to ineffable suffering that sent shockwaves throughout the Anglosphere. The Irish Famine is deemed to be the first national calamity to attract extensive help and support from all around the world. Even though the Irish did not receive adequate support from the British government, their ordeal was mitigated by private charity. Without the donations from a great number of individuals, the death toll among the famished Irishmen and Irishwomen would have been definitely higher. The greatest and most generous amount of assistance came from the United States. In spite of the fact that the U.S. Congress did not decide to earmark any money for the support of famine-stricken Ireland, the horrors taking place in this part of the British Empire pulled at American citizens’ heartstrings and they contributed munificently to the help of the Irish people. Aiding Ireland was embraced by the American press, which, unlike major British newspapers, lauded private efforts to bring succour to the Irish. Such American newspapers as the Daily National Intelligencer, the New York Herald and the Liberator encouraged their readers to contribute to the relief of Ireland and applauded efforts to help the Irish. The aim of this essay is to argue that the American press, in general, played a significant role in encouraging private charity in the United States towards the Irish at the time of An Gorta Mór and, thus, helped to save many lives.

The digitization of materials that is their implementation into the memory of computers, is now the most popular method of preservation, as well as the popularization of cultural heritage. The pioneers in this field were Americans, including Michael Hart, who as early as in the 1970s made the first successful digitization of the Declaration of Independence. Databases created there offer access to resources which are impressive with their multitude of files. The lack of fees and the ability to look closely at the materials and familiarize with them make research easier and faster. US standards may serve as inspiration for actions aimed at protecting and popularizing works collected in Polish institutions.

Digitalizacja materiałów, czyli ich wprowadzanie do pamięci komputerów, jest obecnie najpopularniejszą metodą zachowywania i upowszechniania dziedzictwa kultury. Pionierami w tej dziedzinie byli Amerykanie, np. Michael Hart, który już w latach 70. XX w. dokonał pierwszej udanej cyfryzacji Deklaracji niepodległości. Powstałe tam bazy danych, oferujące dostęp do źródeł, imponują mnogością plików, a brak opłat i możliwość precyzyjnego przyjrzenia się i dokładnego zapoznania z materiałami ułatwiają pracę badawczą. Wzorce amerykańskie mogą posłużyć jako inspiracja do działań mających na celu ochronę i popularyzację dzieł zgromadzonych w polskich instytucjach.

In the 19th century, Russia was one of the most territorially expansive states in the world. However, a century and a half ago there was a spectacular sale of a part of its territory to a foreign state. This large-for-the-time financial transaction did not escape the attention of the world opinion expressed in periodicals. Particularly interesting is the coverage of this event in the press published in the United States between 1867 and 1903. On the basis of the latter, public opinion on the territorial, economic and political implications of the 1867 transaction was analyzed. The research carried out also made it possible to outline the media resonance of the United States of America in the second half of the 19th century, i.e. a media reconstruction of the problems operating in the reality of the time, and in the case of this work, mainly those concerning the new territorial acquisition.
