An outstanding poem, “Hagia Sophia” by Andrzej Busza uses the historical context of early medieval Byzantium in order to describe the universal situation of a human being that confronts the ideas of God and divinity. While reading this poem, the deeper meaning of its reality and symbols putting forward the byzantine setting can be traced; moreover, such a process makes it possible to attempt at deciphering the mysterious inscriptions engraved on the silver spoons of Menas, the protagonist of this poem, with regard to the tragedy of human faith and doubt, an issue that has never lost its significance. In fact, this poem is a bitter and idiosyncratic meditation on the uncertainty embedded in human existence and the doubtful usefulness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Wybitny wiersz Hagia Sophia Andrzeja Buszy wykorzystuje kontekst historyczny wczesnośredniowiecznego Bizancjum, aby opisać uniwersalną sytuację człowieka konfrontującego się z ideami Boga i boskości. Czytając ten wiersz, można doszukać się głębszego znaczenia symboli ukrytych pod bizantyjską oprawą; co więcej, taki proces pozwala na próbę rozszyfrowania tajemniczych inskrypcji wyrytych na srebrnych łyżeczkach Menasa, bohatera tego wiersza, w odniesieniu do tragedii ludzkiej wiary i zwątpienia, która nigdy nie straciła na znaczeniu. W rzeczywistości ten wiersz jest gorzką i osobliwą medytacją nad niepewnością tkwiącą w ludzkiej egzystencji i wątpliwą użytecznością darów Ducha Świętego.

This outline is a report from the Polish Scientific Conference „Jesteśmy wszędzie i nigdzie”. Twórczość literacka, translatorska, krytycznoliteracka i naukowa Andrzeja Buszy („We are everywhene and nowhere”. Literary, trnaslating, critical and scientific output of Andrzej Busza) which took place in Rzeszow on 3-4 November 2016. The aim of the conference was reflection on the literary but also translating, critical and scientific output of Andrzej Busza, an emigrant Polish poet connected with the London group “Continents”, a retired English professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, an expert in the output of Joseph Conrad, residing for many years in Canada. Among the topics discussed by the researchers there were, among others, issues of literary tradition, individual poetic style, problems and autobiography.
