The aim of this issue of Ethics in Progress is to provide a provisional, open-ended view on the ultimate realities of life and the ethical challenges they pose in medical, sociological, and existential contexts. The issue explores axiologies and meta-ethical narratives related to the art of dying, or in other words the moral domain encompassing the quest for a good life and a good death. Two problematic aspects emerge from the latest body of research: (1) the difficulty involved in tackling ethical challenges in medical and sociological contexts; and (2) the marginal role of the patient’s agency and narrative-ownership of end-of-life decision-making. A direction is pointed out that suggests that interventions across interdisciplinary groups involved in medical aid to dying should focus on promoting ethical behaviour on the side of healthcare personnel. Finally, attention to language, discourse, communication, and the narratives of death and dying call this edition of Ethics in Progress to examine the ontological and epistemological categories that underlie the study of lifeworlds and ‘discourse communities’, which are those associated with moral agents interlacing historical motives, language, communication, normative beliefs, social norms and roles, power relations, hard clinical evidence, and contested values in the context of medical practices and, broadly speaking, practices surrounding death.

Autor artykułu analizuje nowelę Unheilbar Paula Heyse pod kątem granicznych doświadczeń głównej bohaterki Marie. Przebywająca w sanatorium protagonistka jest przekonana, że umiera – błędnie zdiagnozowano u niej gruźlicę płuc. Celem artykułu jest z jednej strony analiza przestrzeni, w której porusza się bohaterka, oscylująca między sztuką życia a sztuką umierania. Z drugiej strony samo sanatorium jawi się jako przestrzeń graniczna, zawieszona między życiem a śmiercią, w rozumieniu heterotopii Foucaulta. Przedmiotem refleksji jest przede wszystkim związek rysujący się między przestrzenią a pierwszoosobową narratorką Marie. Protagonistka postrzega samotność jako nowy rodzaj wolności. W sanatorium – miejscu heterotopicznym – Marie poszukuje wyzwolenia od społecznych ograniczeń i przestarzałych koncepcji moralności.

The article examines Paul Heyse’s novella Incurable with regard to the borderline experiences of the supposedly dying Marie. She has been incorrectly diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis by a doctor and henceforth stays in a sanatorium. On the one hand, the article sheds light on the extent to which Marie prepares herself for her supposed death between the art of living and the art of dying. On the other hand, the sanatorium is also understood as a borderline space between life and death and examined under Foucault’s implications of heterotopia. Here, the interplay between spatiality and the first-person narrator Marie is focused on more closely. She sees her new freedom in her loneliness. She strives to free herself from social constraints and outdated moral concepts in the heterotopic place of the sanatorium.

Der Artikel untersucht Paul Heyses Novelle Unheilbar hinsichtlich der Grenzerfahrungen der vermeintlich sterbenden Marie. Von einem Arzt hat sie die fehlerhafte Diagnose einer Lungentuberkulose bekommen und hält sich fortan in einem Sanatorium auf. Der Beitrag beleuchtet zum einen, inwiefern sich Marie zwischen Lebens- und Sterbekunst auf den vermeintlichen Tod vorbereitet. Zum anderen wird das Sanatorium ebenfalls als Grenzraum zwischen Leben und Tod verstanden und als Heterotopie im Sinne Foucaults untersucht. Dabei wird das Wechselspiel zwischen Räumlichkeit und der Ich-Erzählerin Marie näher fokussiert. In ihrer Einsamkeit sieht sie ihre neue Freiheit. Sie strebt danach, sich im heterotopen Ort des Sanatoriums von gesellschaftlichen Zwängen und überholten Moralvorstellungen zu befreien.
