Why Austrian Economists Can’t Get No Respect: It Is Political

Austrians are the Rodney Dangerfields of economics. We can’t get no respect. Why not? On an intellectual level, our adherence for the necessary a posteriori (often termed synthetic a priori) is strongly off putting to the majority of this profession, who are in thrall to logical positivism, which adamantly rejects this type of claim. There are also divergences as regards the causes and cures for the business cycle, anti-trust, market failures such as public goods, externalities and utility. From an economic self-interest level, were this praxeological school ever to take root within the dismal science, thousands of jobs would be lost and salaries would be greatly lowered. It may be that for both of these reasons, Austrianism is deemed a “cult”. We argue that Austrian economics is far more based on modern mathematics and physics than is mainstream economics.

Kiedy rząd odpowiadał za małą część gospodarki, autriacka teoria cykli gospodarczych (ABCT) była odpowiednia dla prywatnych przedsiębiorstw, które zawierały lwią część relacji biznesowych. Później w coraz większej ilości państw, udział gospodarki związanej z państwem wzrastał, a udział przedsiębiorstw prywatnych malał. Stąd nastał czas, aby zaprezentować nową koncepcję, czyli teorię cykli rządu Austrii (AGCT). Ten artykuł jest próbą ukazania tego właśnie fenomenu.

When government accounted for a small proportion of the economy, the Austrian Business Cycle Theory (ABCT) was apropos because private enterprises comprised the lion’s share of commercial interactions. But, of late, in more and more countries, the share of the economy accounted for by the state has increased, and that by business fi rms, less and less. Thus, it is time, it is past time, to introduce a new concept, Austrian Government Cycle Theory (AGCT). The present paper is an attempt to move us in that direction.

W niektórych dziedzinach istnieją już alternatywy dla naturalizmu metodologicznego. Jednakże niewiele osób spoza danej dziedziny zna te alternatywy lub wie, jak są wykorzystywane. Niekiedy nawet sami przedstawiciele tych dziedzin stosują te nienaturalistyczne metodologie, nie wiedząc, że nie są one spójne z naturalizmem metodologicznym. W artykule dokonujemy krótkiego przeglądu dziedzin, w których — zgodnie z naszą wiedzą — występują metodologie niezależne od naturalizmu.

Some fields already incorporate alternatives to methodological naturalism. However, few people outside the field are familiar with these alternatives or how they are used. Sometimes these non-naturalistic methodologies are being used without the participants’ cognizance that the methodology is not methodologically naturalistic. Here, we show a smattering of fields that we are aware of that have touched upon methodologies that don’t depend on naturalism.
