The author focused his attention to Bartek's writings on the history and development of Slovak language. He shows that Bartek was one of the leading Slovak linguists of his time also in this field. Bartek's analysis of typical phenomena from the oldest history of Slovak language didn't give any complex view of its development. They were mainly explanations aimed to demonstrate originality and independence of Slovak language in the family of the Slavonic languages, especially in the reference to Czech language.

These questions are formulated and discussed.

Special attention is paid to the functionality of Bartek's codification principles, to the dominance of the phonetic criterion and to some inconsistencies in the codification layout from 1939 due to uneven attitude to graphical and acoustic form.

The author has assigned the aim to discover in what measure there was the continuity with literary language present among the insights of H. Bartek and his foregoers - S. Czambel and J. Skultety. Analysis of the particular aspects of the literary language theory has shown that H. Bartek's language theoretically and practically oriented work in the 30's (apart from some less important differences) is characterized by a significant ideological and methodological sequence of the foregoers' effort and thus it forms smooth development continuity.

The author deals with works of Henrich Bartek on Slovak language that were written in Bartek's exile after 1945. Special attention is paid to the analysis of Bartek's work 'Novy pravopis slovensky' (New Slovak Orthography) written in 1954 in response to the publication of the new Slovak Orthography (Pravidla slovenskeho pravopisu) in 1953. The author of this paper evaluates Bartek's linguistic work in a wider cultural and political context of the second third of 20th century.
