The paper presents relationship between the creative writing methods of Bogaev, turn of-the-century Russian playwright, and the craftsmanship of Gogol - outstanding literary classic. Bogaev's intention is to show that the ideas included in works of satire, grotesque and caricature master are still true. The epoch of absurdity depicted in the Gogol's prose is not over. There is still a number of absurdities determining the surrounding reality. Both writers focused on irrational dependence of human being on things. Gogol claimed that the depemdenceon things is damaging to human psyche since it makes him a slave and kills humanity in human being. Following in his predecessor's footsteps, Bogaev points at dead souls frequently using personification of things, which in his works are bearers and advocates of essential human values.
