Recognising the close interrelationships between social change and paradigm shifts, this article contributes to an interpretation of conceptual change in the study of borders. While borders continue to have considerable relevance today, we need to revisit them in light of their constantly changing historical, political, and social contexts, grasping their shifting and undetermined nature in space and time. The article underlines the multilevel complexity of borders – from the geopolitical to the level of social practice and cultural production at and across the border at different levels and, thus, not only along the dividing lines of nation-state sovereignties. It seeks to make a constructive contribution to debate within border studies by encouraging a productive understanding of the processual, deterritorialised, and dispersed nature of borders and their ensuring regimes in the era of globalisation and transnational flows, as well as showcasing border research as an interdisciplinary field with its own academic standing. Adopting the borderscapes concept as a central organising element, this article advocates for a relational approach to borders which takes into account complementary perspectives that consider the interaction between political visions and everyday socio-cultural practices, as well as social representations and artistic imaginaries.

This article summarizes the results of 5 years of research on the historical peripheries of Hungary between 1910 and 2010. The identification of peripheral zones in Hungary in 1910 – which geographers failed to investigate thoroughly – contributes to the assessment of mistargeted regional development planning policies in the last hundred years. It also triggered debates, because many of the backward areas coincided with regions dominated by ethnic minorities, thus strengthening the opinion of the historians of the successor states that Austria-Hungary had oppressed its national minorities. The first part of the article summarizes the former interpretations of Trianon, misunderstandings emerging from debates between the different national historiographies. The second part deals with the internal debate in Hungary regarding the interpretation of Trianon. The third part of the article goes further and, by identifying the changes in regional differences in 1930 and in 2010, evaluates the development policies of the successor states. As the successor states were driven by the same convictions and pursued similar policies toward zones inhabited by minorities as Hungary did, the differences did not disappear. The recent situation shows that there were remarkable shifts in the extension of backward zones and the question naturally arises when this process began. Using the census data of the 1930s we analyse whether some of these changes observable in 2010 can be traced back to WWII, and if yes, whether these were the direct consequences of the new borders drawn in 1920 or, on the contrary, went back to earlier processes under Hungarian rule.

This article analyses the short story collection Granice świata (“The Limits of the World”) by Kazimierz Wierzyński. It emphasises two war narratives, namely The Patrol and Sentence of Death, in which the firstperson narrator (the author himself) experiences extreme events. Wierzyński’s characters commit terrible atrocities, and the writer describes their ruthless and unexpected reactions to highly distressing episodes.

This work analyses a conflict between Spain and its autonomous region of Catalonia. We appeal to context of phenomenon of identity borders and emotional bordering, with using a border study methodology. The article characterizes signs and symbols - both tangible and intangible - on the basis of which the Catalans identify them as a nation with ambitions to have their own state or to federalize the Kingdom of Spain. The work also describes historical and current context of struggle between Madrid and Barcelona (economical, political, and cultural). In the last part we accentuate four scenarios of potential evolution of relations between Spain and Catalonia.
