A comparative analysis of the staff and material-technical constituents of the scientific-technical potential of the Western region of Ukraine has been carried out. Scientific schools in the academic establishments of the region are identified on the basis of the chosen criteria. The data of the development of the scientific-technical sphere of the Western region of Ukraine and countries of the EU have been compared.

The paper analyses the competitiveness of the branch structure of manufacturing industry in the Slovak Republic between 1998 and 2008. An analysis of the competitiveness at the branch level is performed as a national economy evaluation using a branch approach, with the consequent overlapping between the perception of the competitiveness at the macro and mesial levels. The actual competitiveness of Slovak manufacturing industry was analysed by means of standard indicators at the branch level (RCA, Michaely’s index), and through the application of the market segmentation method.

Analysis of the branch structure of scientific personnel with degree of Doctor or Candidate of science in the Western Region of Ukraine has been carried out and differences in this structure in comparison with Ukraine on the whole and the EU has been shown. Specialities clusters in the region which are mostly represented by the specialists with higher qualifications have been determined. A level of coordination between a supply of branches of science with personnel with higher qualifications in the Lviv Region and their preparation through post-graduate courses has been estimated. The correspondence between the structure of specialists with a scientific degree and the priority directions of the scientific-technological development has been analyzed.
