The article is a report from the fieldwork carried out in a Bedouin village of Qasr al-Sir in the Negev in Israel. The aim of the realized research field project was to critically analyze the sustainable development programs which have been implemented in the village by Bustan – a non-governmental organization from Be’er Sheva. In the first section of the paper’s main body there is a description of historical, cultural, social and economic aspects of the current situation of the Bedouins living in the region. The second part focuses solely on the village where the research was carried out, i.e. Qasr al-Sir. It is followed by a section providing a report on Bustan’s activities in the village. The forth section consists of descriptions of five sustainable development programs, which have been implemented in the Bedouin community, i.e. PermaNegev, Negev Unplugged Tours, Eco Khan, empowering of Bedouin women, and teaching English. The article is concluded with a sketch of problems stemming from the cultural differences between Bedouins and Bustan’s westerners, which may be held responsible for delays or failures in implementation of the planned programs.

The issue of the process of integration and absorption of Arab Bedouin female students in teacher training institutions in Israel constitutes a significant yet critical chapter in the course of forming the personal and professional identity of the prospective teacher. The main purpose of this article is to describe the difficulties experienced by Arab Bedouin female students during the process of their social and educational integration and absorption in teacher training institutions. Also, to deal with the differences between Arab and Jewish teacher training institutions. Furthermore, to what extent the cultural encounter is perceived by the students that would enable them to have social and educational integration. The study involved 200 Bedouin Arab female students living in the Negev and learning in four teacher-training colleges in Israel; Kaye College of Education, Achva College, Sakhnin College for teacher training and Al-Qasmi College. The students answered a questionnaire that was written for this study. The findings of the study indicated many difficulties in the process of absorbing and integrating Arab Bedouin students in various teacher-training institutions in the country. Not to mention, language difficulties experienced by them with regard to reading articles and writing papers, not in their native tongue. The multicultural encounter between the different genders also poses a great difficulty in addition to the age difference between Arab and Jewish students. Furthermore, the policy of the Israeli academic institutions does not fully represent the Arab culture and in the interaction between the academic and administrative staff and the Arab Bedouin students.

The phenomenon of dropping out of students from the educational system in Israel has been steadily increasing in recent years. Many research studies that addressed the phenomenon of dropping out indicated an increase in the percentage of students dropping out from the Bedouin educational system in the Negev. The present research study examines the tendency to drop out of adolescents in situations of risk in the recognized Bedouin communities in comparison to adolescents in situations of risk in the unrecognized Bedouin communities with regard to different demographic variables and the involvementof the parents. These adolescents are daily exposed to emotional and social difficulties and do not receive adequate research attention. The issue of the dropping out of adolescents is an acute problem with considerable significance in the Arab sector in general and in the Bedouin communities in particular. The research study examines the situation today, the situation of the adolescents who are dropping out, their problems, and the reasons that led them to dropping out, in a comparison between the two types of Bedouin communities. The research findings will indicate possible ways for the reduction of the multidimensional phenomenon of dropping out. In light of the large gaps that exist between the educational system in Jewish society and the educational system in Bedouin society, the research study emphasizes that there is a direct impact on the Bedouin educational system, which directly influences the dropping out of students from the educational system in general and the dropping out of students in situations of risk. The sample consisted of 90 adolescents in situations of risk, 45 adolescents from recognized communities and 45 adolescents from unrecognized communities from different schools. In light of theexamination of the research findings, it appears that the involvement of the parents influences the drooping out significantly. This finding indicates the importance of parental involvement in the school and its importance for the future of the children. In other words, a Bedouin child with an involved family will likely remain in the educational framework, while a Bedouin child whose parents are disconnected from his studies has increased chances to drop out of the educational system.

This article attempts to reconstruct the image of Bedouin communities in the works of Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski. During his excursion in the Middle East, Rzewuski acquainted with Bedouins, gaining their trust and respect, which allowed him to get detailed knowledge of their culture and traditions, which he later described in his manuscript Concerning the horses of the Orient and those originating from oriental breeds. The analysis focuses on three issues: the way Rzewuski perceived Bedouin communities and interpersonal relations in the Arab world, his personal experiences and acquaintances with Bedouins, and the comparisons between Europe and the Arab world in terms of social life. The analysis is presented in a broader context – how Arabs were perceived in Europe and Poland in Rzewuski’s times and the fascination with the Orient in the Romanticism era.

In the article I examine Paweł Smoleński’s reportage “Wieje szarkijja. Beduini z pustyni Negew” (2016) in order to present the complexity and problematic situation of the Bedouin minority in the modern state of Israel. I mainly refer to the methodologies and tools proposed by researchers from the Ben-Gurion University center, e.g. O. Yiftachel, I. Abu-Saad or A. Amara, as well as to others (C. Parizot, R. Kanaaneh). Their research is characterized by a postcolonial approach, exposing the ethnocratic and discriminatory nature of the actions of the state of Israel. I am trying to highlight the critical discourse of Smoleński's project by analyzing successively the construction of a romantic story about Bedouins, the dynamic nature of their identity and the phenomenon of “shifting stereotypes”. I also discuss the delicate theme of Bedouin “complicity” in the formation and maintenance of their ethnic representation as the nomadic people of the Negev desert.

Artykuł przedstawia analizę reportażu pt. "Wieje szarkijja.

Artykuł czerpie z postkolonialnych teorii prawnych i koncepcji geografii wyobrażonych, rzucając światło na proces tworzenia i realizacji izraelskich reprezentacji pustyni Negew poprzez wdrażanie regulacji prawnych.

This article draws on the postcolonial legal theories and the concept of imaginative geographies, aiming to shed light on the process of producing and realizing Israeli representations of the Negev Desert through the implementation of legal regulations. The focus is on chosen imaginations of the Negev Desert, researched here as a case study of material realisation of imaginative geographies. In the analysis, symbolic narratives, visions of spaces, and new categories, intertwined in legal acts as their foundations, justifications and goals are underlined. The conclusions of presented study show that imaginations and visions can be in fact reproduced in space through legal regulations, and in the analysed case law has three aspects: it is an expression of imagined geographies; it translates those visions into technical terms; and lastly, the implementation of its provisions becomes the main instrument of producing those representations in reality.
