We współczesnej wersji dyskusji wokół problem Bożej ukrytości, którą zapoczątkował argument zaprezentowany przez Johna Schellenberga, problem ten postawiony jest w sposób znacznie odbiegający od jego tradycyjnego ujęcia. Nie brakuje jednak odniesień do myślicieli z przeszłości, którzy zmagali się z problemem Bożej ukrytości. Wśród nich pojawiają się sporadyczne odwołania do autorów należących do okresu średniowiecza: św. Anzelma z Canterbury i św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Żaden z autorów biorących udział we współczesnym sporze nie odwołuje się jednak do myśli św. Bonawentury. W swoim tekście zamierzam przedstawić i omówić wątki związane z Bożym ukryciem, które można odnaleźć w teologicznych dziełach św. Bonawentury. Ukażę ich miejsce i znaczenie w systemie teologicznym Mistrza z Bagnoregio. Wskażę także możliwe sposoby wykorzystania tych wątków we współczesnej dyskusji filozoficznej.

In the contemporary version of the discussion around the problem of God’s hiddenness, which was initiated by the argument presented by John Schellenberg, the problem is posed in a way that differs significantly from its traditional presentation. However, there is no shortage of references to thinkers of the past who have grappled with the problem of divine hiddenness. Among these, there are occasional references to authors belonging to the medieval period: Anselm of Canterbury and Thomas Aquinas. However, none of the authors involved in the contemporary dispute refers to the thought of Bonaventure. In my paper, I intend to present and discuss the themes related to divine hiddenness that can be found in the theological works of Bonaventure. I will show their place and importance in the theological system of the Master of Bagnoregio. I will also indicate possible ways in which these themes can be used in contemporary philosophical discussion.

Divine hiddenness is a problem that demands to be treated with due seriousness. One should not run away from this problem. Nor should divine hiddenness be made easy by introducing solutions that make the tension associated with the hiddenness problem disappear or be alleviated. The solution I propose in my book Źródło i noc. Wprowadzenie do współczesnego absconditeizmu [The Spring and the Night: An Introduction into Contemporary Absconditheism], which I have called absconditeism, is an attempt to deal with the problem of hiddenness in its strongest possible form. I consider this problem by also taking into account the strongest version of theism, which is referred to as classical theism. The article is a combined response to texts authored by Maciej Bała, Ryszard Mordarski and Marek Słomka. I refer to the critics appearing in the above-mentioned texts, clarify my position and present the reasons why I believe that the absconditeism I propose, which is a serious and avoiding facilitations approach to the problem of hiddenness, is the right way of addressing this issue.

Boża ukrytość jest problemem, który domaga się potraktowania z należytą powagą. Nie należy od tego problemu uciekać. Nie należy również ułatwiać sobie sprawy z Bożym ukryciem przez wprowadzanie rozwiązań, które sprawiają, że napięcie związane z problemem ukrytości znika lub zostaje złagodzone. Zaproponowane przeze mnie w książce Źródło i noc. Wprowadzenie do współczesnego absconditeizmu rozwiązanie, które nazwałem absconditeizmem, jest próbą zmierzenia się z problemem ukrytości w jego najmocniejszej możliwej postaci. Rozważam ten problem, biorąc pod uwagę również najmocniejszą wersję teizmu, którą określa się jako klasyczny teizm. Artykuł stanowi łączną odpowiedź na teksty, których autorami są Maciej Bała, Ryszard Mordarski oraz Marek Słomka. Odnoszę się do pojawiających się w wyżej wymienionych tekstach krytyk, doprecyzowuję moje stanowisko oraz przedstawiam racje, dla których uważam, iż proponowany przeze mnie absconditeizm, stanowiący poważne i unikające ułatwień ujęcie problemu ukrytości, jest właściwym sposobem podejmowania tego zagadnienia.

Problem Bożej ukrytości w kontekście nauki Celem artykułu jest próba znalezienia rozwiązania problemu Bożej ukrytości, który w kontekście nauki przybiera postać pytania o to, dlaczego, jeśli Bóg istnieje, nauka może Go całkowicie ignorować, a mimo to tak wiele wyjaśniać. Formułujemy „argument z ukrytości w kontekście nauki” na wzór „argumentu z ukrytości” zaproponowanego przez J. L. Schellenberga i pokazujemy możliwe sposoby obalenia tego argumentu. Proponujemy również refutację tego argumentu w postaci „absconditeizmu eksplanacyjnego,” którego najlepszym wyrazem jest teza o „zespojeniu” naukowych i teologicznych sposobów wyjaśniania świata. Argumentujemy również, iż teza „absconditeizmu eksplanacyjnego” może zostać rozszerzona na całą dyskusję o ukryciu Boga, dostarczając możliwej odpowiedzi na „argument z ukrytości”.

The aim of the paper is to try to find a solution to the problem of divine hiddenness, which in the context of science takes the form of the question of why, if God exists, science can completely ignore Him and yet explain away so much. We formulate the “argument from hiddenness in the context of science” modelled on the “argument from hiddenness” proposed by J. L. Schellenberg and show possible ways to refute this argument. We also propose a refutation in the form of “explanatory absconditheism,” the best expression of which is the thesis of “articulation” of scientific and theological ways of explaining the world. We also argue that the thesis of “explanatory absconditheism” can be extended to the entire discussion of divine hiddenness, providing possible response to the “argument from hiddenness.”
