Le présent article vise à analyser le Documento de Santarém, promulgué en mai 1972, à l’issue d’une assemblée des évêques de l’Amazonie brésilienne. Les prélats voulaient réviser en profondeur les pratiques pastorales à la lumière des décisions prises lors du Concile Vatican II (1962-1965) et de la 2e Conférence des Évêques d’Amérique Latine à Medellín (1968). Dans un contexte de transformations d’une envergure jusque là inconnue – surtout en raison de la Operação Amazônia, plan d’intégration et d’exploration de l’Amazonie en vue du progrès national prôné par la junte militaire (au pouvoir depuis 1964) – les évêques d’Amazonie choisirent les concepts-clé de l’incarnation et de la libération pour réinterpréter le rôle de l’Église catholique dans cette région périphérique du Brésil qui était la principale cible des projets stratégiques et socioéconomiques des militaires.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza tzw. Documento de Santarém, promulgowanego w maju 1972 roku po historycznych obradach biskupów Amazonii brazylijskiej. Hierarchowie poddali głębokiej rewizji dotychczasowe praktyki duszpasterskie w świetle orzeczeń Vaticanum Secundum (1962-1965) i Drugiej Konferencji Biskupów Ameryki Łacińskiej (Medelin 1968). Analizując globalne i wielopłaszczyznowe przeobrażenia dokonujące się w kraju, zwłaszcza Operação Amazonia, tj. plan integralnej eksploracji Amazonii na rzecz postępu narodowego, promowanego przez juntę wojskową (u władzy od 1964 roku) – biskupi Amazonii wskazali na kluczową rolę teologicznych konceptów Inkarnacji i Wyzwolenia. Kierując się tymi kryteriami biskupi poddali reinterpretacji miejsce i rolę Kościoła katolickiego w tym odosobnionym regionie Brazylii, który – nagle – stal się centrum zainteresowania i celem rozlicznych strategii socjoekonomicznych i wojskowych.

The aim of the present article is the analysis of the so-called Documento de Santarém, which was promulgated in May 1972, after the historical debates of the bishops of the Brazilian Amazon. The hierarchs subjected to a profound revision the existing pastoral practice, in the sight of the Vatican II’s adjudications (1962-1965) and the Second General Conference of Latin American Bishops (Medelin 1968). While analysing the global and multi-faceted transformation taking place in the country, especially the Operação Amazonia, that is – a plan of the integral exploration for the benefit of the national progress, promoted by the junta (in control since 1964) – the Amazon bishops pointed to the key role of the theological concepts of the Incarnation and Liberation. Being guided by these criteria, the bishops subjected to the reinterpretation the place and the role of the Catholic Church in this isolated region of Brazil, which – suddenly – became the centre of interest and the purpose of the numerous socio-economic and military strategies.
