There are 3 methods how to enlarge the EU: a) accession of a new member state, b) member state expansion scenario and c) incorporation of special member state territories (Overseas countries and territories, special cases and territories beyond an effective control of member states). A current enlargement EU agenda consists of 8 candidate countries and 2 applicants. We can imagine in a predictable future an integration of three Dutch islands in Caribbean which are now integral parts of Netherlands (Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius). There are also legal preconditions for an integration of Northern Ireland after potential Irish re-unification. Serious discussions on a joining to EU are being held in Greenland and Faroe islands. Considering opinion polls in the UK and in Iceland we cannot exclude that in a predictable future these countries might again apply for the EU-membership. Other future EU enlargements are now only hypothetic and not very probable.
