On the basis of the Francophone research in the field of visual anthropology we will try to show in this text that there was a shift between how the Ancient Greeks saw reality and how they portrayed it. We will base this examination on the second kind of mimêsis presented in Plato's dialogue, Sophist, where representation deforms the real and we represent reality not as it is, but as we want to see it. Even scenes that have a supposed guarantee of realism, the scenes of everyday life, often represent our desires or fantasies more than the reality.

The first stasimon of Sophocles' Antigone often called an Ode on Man is considered to be a praise of human's power. In this ode the dramatist joins in the discussion about the cultural progress and the development of human life, his abilities and political skills, which was held by the great poets and philosophers in Athens at that time. In the human achievements and success in many fields presented in this ode in a different way from this made by Hesiod in his Works and Days, and especially in organization of the ordered society maintained by laws, we can easily perceive the resemblances between this ode and the myth put in Protagoras' mouth in Plato's dialogue. Considering that this improvement is due entirely to man's own efforts, unaided either by divine intervention or by a superhuman teacher, the issues of the proper education and upbringing of a good citizen were very current. And both Sophocles as well as Protagoras take the floor on this issue and touch on the subject of aretē and the question, what the man should be, how he should behave or which standards and principles he should obey in his life, especially in his civil life. For Sophocles as well as for Protagoras, the peak of human achievements is the foundation of polis and the appearance of a man, who is above all a citizen. It seems, that the dramatist and the philosopher wanted to pay attention to necessity of obedience of certain principles, which are binding for everyone in the society and by which everyone should be guided in his life. However, emphasizing the importance of human reason, art and ingenuity, it depends solely on a man and his beliefs, to what degree he would put the principles of aretē into effect in his life.

This research focuses on those Gradec citizens who were elected to administrative functions since these were held by the richest and most distinguished citizens. They constituted the political elite of the city as there was only a thin line between the economic, social and political elites in Gradec. This paper deals with many aspects and elements that played a role in the formation of the urban elite, elements such as family ties, wealth, moral values, piety, education and membership of the nobility.

The paper's aim is to explain the crucial aspects of the close relationship of an Athenian citizen of the classical era to his city-state. It gives a brief historical outline of the democratic institutions in Athens as established after Ephialtes' reforms of the Athenian constitution in 462. Further, it exemplifies the political system in question on Socrates' relationship to his city-state, as presented in Plato's Criton. Finally, it considers the grounds of Socrates' being sentenced to death by the Athenian democratic tribunal, arguing that the heroic death of Socrates was an inevitable consequence of his philosophical creed, to which he adhered all his life.

The European politicians from Central Europe use a very strange definition of liberalism. This strange definition leaves out the idea of equal opportunities – one of the two liberal principles. This omission is one of the results brought by the radical liberalism. Radical liberals protect liberty so strongly that they refuse any equality. They are afraid of the propensity to the totalitarianism so they refuse almost all state interventions. Radical liberals forget that an absolute refusing of the equality leads to breaking of one of the liberal principles. Liberty without equal opportunity leads to the same illiberal situation as equality without individual liberty. Both of the liberal principles must be preserved if we want to live in a liberal society. Contemporary liberals should find a solution to unite the liberal principles.

The article is a part of considerations associated with civic education – the issue that attracts more and more attention in public debate related to the condition of modern democracy. The attitudes of citizens and citizenship see the individual, in fact the foundation of democracy – the most attractive model in light of changing civilization, as a remedy to the global crisis. The civic education in its formula has been institutionalized in Europe in terms of understanding the modern era of enlightenment of the state. The German model, which was presented in the article, shows a number of differences and the appropriate solutions, which – especially today – are interesting from the Polish point of view. The German education system has evolved since the civil subordinate to the state to shape attitudes oriented towards the civil society. This transformation is particularly interesting for Poland, which – despite two decades after the transformation of political democracy after 1989 – still does not have the functioning system of civic education. The object of research is also interesting because it freed itself from the traditional disciplines of education and upbringing, and became the subject of a wide range of sciences related directly or indirectly to the human being as the subject of changes in the modern world.

The article deals with the analysis of Cicero’s redefinition of three political terms – state, citizen, exile – in the ‘Paradoxon IV’ (Cic. Parad. 27-32). Cicero attacks against Publius Clodius Pulcher in these chapters and dwells on the theme of his own exile. By stoic philosophical practices is here Clodius depicted as an enemy, non-citizen and Cicero as a stoic sage and ideal citizen. The study shows that philosophical elements are applicable to the political and rhetorical discourses and can be combined.

Public participation is a comprehensive social science concept of interdisciplinary character, with the impact on the society. This paper is concentrated on public participation in settlement development at the local level in Slovakia as well as in international context. It takes into consideration social and historical origins of participation and reflects some issues of citizen participation in the development of settlement structures in Slovakia. The significance of citizen participation in settlement development lies in the fact that citizens create their settlement environment according to their social needs and at the same time under this process they get changed too. Participating citizens cease to be apathetic towards their social and settlement environment and take responsibility for the activities within their communities. It is continual process of improving the settlement conditions and its implication is to reach the wishful shape of environment and to develop local community with its identity and social cohesion. Citizen participation connects personal and group interests as well as the interests of local communities with public well-being. The paper points out the mechanisms of participation in the settlement development and clarifies the legal framework for public participation in the Slovak as well as in the international context. At the same time the paper points out the prevailing forms of contribution projects, based on the principles of partnership and cooperation, the objective of which was to coordinate mutual activities of the stakeholders oriented towards solutions of local and regional issues of the settlements in Slovakia. Several identified issues of the citizen participation at the local level are brought forward. They are based on the results from sociological surveys of local democracy and the process of participation has been illustrated by the contextual analysis of the implemented citizen participation project in the frame of an international research and development project “Ecocity”.
