The paper explains the idea of co-ordination of social security schemes in European Union. The attention was paid both to the evolution of co-ordination within a long period of time and to particular character of EC Regulation in comparison to provisions of international agreements on social security. It is also very important that the European Community law doesn't change conditions of acquisition of the right to social security benefits laid down in the national legislation. The co-ordination is supposed to guarantee keeping rights acquired resulting from the social security and rights being in the course of acquisition so that persons which want to make a use of free movement of persons within Community would not be treated worse in the scope of the social security than persons which worked only in one Member State.
