Philosophical conceptions of representation developed by Nelson Goodman and Charles Sanders Peirce come from different metaphysical positions (Goodman’s nominalism and Peirce’s realism). This fact causes serious problems when comparing both conceptions and often results in inaccuracies or oversimplifications. The aim of this paper is to find a framework for the comparison of the two conceptions of representation and consider their possible role in understanding representation as a source of knowledge. The first and the second part of the paper shortly introduce Peirce’s and Goodman’s conceptions of representation. Subsequently, a comparison of these conceptions is proposed in the context of limits of our representations. The limits of representations are suggested as a basis for further comparison without the need to reject one of the conceptions. The conclusion outlines some consequences of this approach for the analysis of representations as a source of knowledge.

This article deals with subordinate nominal content clauses in Czech and in German. Nominal content clauses are specific in that the so-called relative tenses are used in them. In Czech there is, with a few exceptions, only one principle of the use of the relative tenses, whereas in German there exist three different principles. The aim of this article is to find out how the German principles are applied and how they correspond to the Czech principle. The results obtained should be helpful for German teachers and for translators from Czech into German, or from German into Czech.

The author - after expressing his thanks to Istvan Pete for the latter's thorough and many-sided assessment of his book (cf. Magyar Nyelvor 133: 295-310) - outlines his views that differ from Pete's standpoint concerning some questions raised there (the relation between gradation and measuring, gradable and ungradable words). He points out the interrelations between natural phenomena and human mental activity as well as those between gradation, measuring and clarification.

The poetic novel Maria [Mary] by Antoni Malczewski published in 1825 is an outstanding work which, according to some researchers, could initialize Polish Romantic literature on equal terms with two volumes of Poezje [Poems] by Adam Mickiewicz. An unquestionable value of Mary is its author’s mature artistic workshop revealed, among others, in a skillful use of linguistic and stylistic devices. The subject of this article is a description of non-graded comparative constructions occurring in A. Malczewski’s poem that are based on cultural associations. A formal side of these clues has been analyzed. The first part of the text depicts a degree of comparisons’ density in the work’s linguistic tissue, their distribution in the narration and dialogues and monologues as well as the dependence between linear extension of comparisons and the volume of the text occupied by them. Whereas the second part of the article is focused on the discussion of the structure of comparative constructions and their grammar characteristics.

This article presents a New Testament terminology for children. Matt. 18:3-5 uses the noun paidion meaning a little child, baby, infant. The authors of the New Testament were using this term with reference to a immaturity, weakness, dependence, powerless and subjection to authority. In the first century of the Christian era children were marginal figures in the society of the ancient world. They were completely under the father’s authority. In the teaching of Jesus children were models of and for his followers which should submit to the sovereign will of God. The childhood is only a initial stage on the road to Christian mature manhood.

The paper deals with the problem of effective and aesthetic exploitation of sounds, jangle, music and silence in making an atmosphere of stress and fear in horror movies. The authors analyze the frequency spectrum of sounds and complexity of musical motif in selected samples from two movies, which represent the minimalist and maximalist approach in answering the research problem. Beside of that, the authors deal with relationship of audio and visual aspects of the movies explored. First part of the research is inspired by hypothesis of psychoacoustics dealing with physical characteristics of an unpleasant sound that causes intensive physiological reaction of a human organism. The authors assume that sound with these characteristics could be one of the reasons of an emotional reaction a viewer experiences when watching a horror movie. Next area on which this research is focused is the use of noises. According to psychoacoustics, noise affects the perception of other sounds, thus it is able to aid building of an atmosphere and tension in the movie. In the third part, the authors compare the complexity and variations of musical motifs of both of the movies. Motifs with lack of a structure and rigid repetitiveness can be boring for a viewer, which may be very counterproductive in terms of examined film genre. In the final part of this research, the authors deal with the relationship of audio and visual aspects of movies explored.

Safarik's collection of poems Tatranska Muza s lyrou slovanskou (The Muse of Tatras with a Slavonic lyre, Levoca, 1814) attracts a lot of attention in the literary-historical discourse - as a rule it is regarded as an important milestone in the development of Slovak poetry, or as the first manifestation of real modern Slovak poetry. On the other hand, it overshadows - not quite fairly - other authors´ literary works written at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Recent interpretations and analyses of the period of Slovak literature in question shows the need to review some of the profiles, especially those which comment on its influence on steering domestic literary development. Although it is indisputable, some of Safarik's poems carry features of more personal, subjective or intimate poetic expression, it cannot be overlooked that he often combined it with other poetic strategies which are just as relevant sources of information when reconstructing general outlines of the Slovak literary development. Therefore when analysing and assessing (not only) Safarik's collection, it is necessary to take account of the complete list of contemporary literary principles, a possibility of foreign influence or a number of other potential sources of inspiration, as well as the historical, social and cultural context of the overall contemporary literary production.
