Especially in the recent years, a considerable number of foreign words has emerged in the Slovak media and literature, among them many originating in languages using other than Latin-based scripts. These words often appear in variable shapes, apparently without any consistency. The article tackles the chaos existing in the transcription of Arabic words for the Slovak media and popularisation texts and suggests a set of rules for this purpose, trying to preserve the maximum of the original language phonology and, at the same time, to make the resulting form as simple as possible, either for printing or for reading. To avoid ambiguities arising from the use of grapheme clusters such as 'th', the proposed rules sacrifice a limited number of phonemes, viz. the Arabic underscored t and d, which graphically merge into t and d respectively. Similar is the fate of the so-called emphatic consonants, usually transliterated with 'dotted' characters. The article puts a special emphasis on preserving the phonological quality and quantity of Arabic vowels, both of which can be easily rendered in the written Slovak language. The same holds true for the quantity of Arabic consonants, if present. Attached to the article is a list of the most frequent Arabic proper names occuring in the field of politics.

Following our previous paper on the vocal system of Slovak dialects in Serbia, we present the characteristics of the consonant system of studied dialects in this work. We compare the research results with the findings of J. Štolc in order to reveal the changes that have occurred in the structure of these dialects in the meantime. In the final part of the paper, we provide a look at selected suprasegmental phenomena in these dialects.

The article deals with the transcription of Hebrew consonants and vowels into the Czech language and offers phonetic transcription as the most useful and phonetically correct system. The system presented in the article is based on the standard phonology of modern Israeli Hebrew. It leaves aside the problem of pronunciation of biblical Hebrew, partly because of lack of space and partly because its pronunciation is artificially reconstructed and therefore does not reflect the contemporary pronunciation of Hebrew as a living and spoken language. The phonetic system presented in the article is compared with other systems already used in Czech literature. Although there are still many things to be discussed, the author thinks that a simple phonetic system should be used as the basic norm for the transcription of Hebrew in popular and scholarly literature. A similar problem of ununified transcription also appears in the transcription of Arabic and other languages written in non-Latin alphabets. This topic deserves further serious consideration on the academic level.

The acoustic layer of Vladimír Holan´s poetry provides its readers and poetologists with a new semantic potential which must be integrated into the total semantics of the work of art itself. That is why we place proportion of instrumentation of sounds into the centre of Holan´s intentional modification of acoustic layer in his poems. Aim of the article is to find relevant repetitions and sound configurations in the spheres of isolated words, lines of poetry, strophes or collection of poems. We proceed from the assumption that every literary work of art consists of words which are artistically stylized and that it always holds a semantic sign. Furthermore, we try to draw attention, on the basis of a detailed analysis of individual collections of poems, to organization of vocals and consonants and their configurations. We aim to describe the way it becomes, more or less, a self-sufficient element of composition. In the collection of poems Záhřmotí published in 1940 the importance of status of sound orchestration is the most serious in comparison with Holan´s other works. Here, the cacophony effects dominate and through their abstract character they fill and substitute semantic gaps in a fictitious space-time of poems in Záhřmotí.

On the literary texts materials of the old Ukrainian language (period from the end of 17th to beginning of 18th century) from territory of Serednenaddnipryanschyny the forms of infinitive with basis on velar and laryngeal 'g' 'k' in comparison with the same forms of the old Ukrainian language and with modern dialectal materials were analysed.

The analysis deals with typologically relevant phenomena on phonological level of the Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian languages. Both standard languages (and standard Polish) belong to the extreme consonantal type with undeveloped vocalism (7 vowels) and developed consonantism (32, 35 consonants). The standard Slovak represents a transient type between extreme vocalic and extreme consonantal types because the proportion of vowels (15) and consonants (27) is relatively balanced.
