The article presents the review of research on the undertaking of training and further education by adults. It shows limitations of existing research findings and proposes the theoretical model based on the model of action phases in the goal realization process. There are also measurement methods described which could be used in further research.

In the last decade the value of continuing education has raised. The major role in this affair is assigned to higher education. The article presents principal assumptions of European education politics referring to adult education and the form of continuing education in foreign and polish higher universities. New solutions such as honoring informal education in favor of formal education have been emphasized.

The National University of Distance Education (UNED) celebrate its 40th anniversary in the 2012th year. Currently, the University is one of the largest institutions specialized in distance education in Europe and in the world. In this article an author presents selected aspects of working the UNED: the history, the structure, the educacional offer and the methodology of learning. A lot of solutions applicated in the UNED are worth to discuss in the context of polish distance education.
