Literary narratives address themes from everyday life that reflect on questions of meaning and (religious) values. Jutta Richter’s Der Hund mit dem gelben Herzen oder die Geschichte vom Gegenteil is not a retelling of a biblical story framed as children’s literature, nor is it a retelling of the biblical creation story. The work, innovative in both narrative theory and thematic content, features non-linear, multi-perspective storytelling that highlights different viewpoints. The thematic diversity unfolds in the depiction of experiential structures from ordinary life which are illustrated as journeys or quests to find life’s purpose by collecting experiences. The central themes, directly related to the real world of both children and adults, are presented on multiple narrative levels as existential parables about our existence.
