The term 'custom' is not always used explicity in science. It has three meanings, at least. The first one is a way of behaviour, the second one specifies habits and rites aimed at aesthetical needs of the society, while the third one is connected with unwritten customary law. In life, however, we do not meet those meanings separately but they penetrate each other. We always must take into consideration the time and social conditionality of the analyzed phenomena. A (family, work, local) community is the bearer of customs. The contemporary communities often differ from those traditional ones. A present human does not submit to the press of the environment in which he/she lives. The cause can be seen in the world view change and in the modification of ethos. The cease of traditional customs, which were based on the system of values accepted by the majority, results, however, in the lability of moral standards and the revitalization of ethnic behaviour.

It ensures the continuity of culture, transition of social experiences and it plays also significant integration and psycho-emotional roles in life of the individual, family and community.

Easter Monday calls (przywolywki) is a custom practised in Kujawy, in preparation for the traditional dousing of the girls with water (dyngus). The names of the local young girls for whom the young men have paid a ransom are called out in public and the men say how much water they will pour on the girls. Presently, the custom is practised only in Szymborze, formerly a village and today one of the districts of Inowroclaw. The Easter Monday calls survived in Szymborze thanks to the Bachelors' Club Association, which is officially registered, has its own seal, statute and 'minutes book'. The beginnings of this exceptional organisation which groups local bachelors go back to the times of Poland's partition. Earlier, more complex social functions of the custom of 'przywolywki' have disappeared while their entertainment functions have prevailed. Today 'przywolywki' have a negligible impact on the local life although they continue to be valued by the inhabitants of Szymborze as the expression of the local tradition, worthy of sustaining, and an opportunity for entertainment. The author presents transformations of the customs and the attitude of the inhabitants of Szymborze to it, both the old and young generations. The article was written on the basis of field research conducted in 2009-2010.

The article attempts to establish the cultural status of the New Year’s Eve, both as a total of traditional social practices and as a cultural tourism phenomenon. The author stresses its relation to the series of Carnival celebrations. They are connected mostly through a common category used to identify them – the rites of passage. Thanks to this category it is possible to grasp the social function of The New Year’s Eve omitting symbolic-cultural meanings of the traditional-folk activities underlying them.
