The subject of the monograph is a polemic-apologetical manuscript year-book, which is located in the National Library of Ukraine, Institute of Manuscripts, collection № 312, shelf mark Соф 104 (105). The manuscript is written in semi-uncial Cyrillic script in the Church Slavonic language. It is a late 16th century year-book against Protestantism concerning questions about the Eucharist, transubstantiation and liturgy. The preface of the manuscript is explaining the aim of compiling the year-book. It is interesting for its ecclesiology, especially because it illustrates the relation between Byzantine Christians and Latin Catholics in the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. The questions of Ecclesial affiliation of the author, his theological background as well as the date of composing the preface are also examined. The manuscript contains also a rare liturgy – the Liturgy of St. Peter. The structure of the liturgy is studied with the aim to state more precisely the process of its compilation. The analysis of the text of the liturgy, its structure, environment and manuscript tradition is also provided in order to determine whether it belongs to the Byzantine or the Latin tradition. It is one of the four preserved Slavonic manuscripts with this liturgy; the three other manuscripts are also briefly examined and compared in the monograph. The question about a possible relation of the Liturgy of St. Peter to the Cyrillo-Methodian mission is examined as well as the question of the date of its Slavonic translation.

The Mission of Saints Constantine Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia in the second half of the 9th century took place in certain historical context and paradigm that was determined by theological and disciplinary regulations of the Roman church. The authors are presenting church historical context of the Cyrillo-Methodian mission, the activity of the Roman pontiffs and theological thought that was developed in the ninth century and that had an influence on the inculturation mission of Saint Brothers. With this research, authors are introducing interdisciplinary approach in the theological research, by connecting historical and theological conclusions.

The Cyril and Methodius mission, that took place on the territory of Great Moravia, was not only of political but also of ecclesiastical significance, especially because of the work done by the Thessalonian brothers in the field of language and liturgy. Their translations of liturgical books into Old Slavonic brought with them important milestones that played a significant role in later centuries. In the period of recatholization, the Archbishop of Esztergom, Peter Pázmaň, was instrumental in the publication of the Esztergom Ritual, which brought with it a language that was understandable to the people and to the celebration of the liturgy, and this was preserved in later editions, even down to the publication of the Rituale Slovacchiæ. The publication of the Slovak Catholic hymnal Cantus Catholici was also an important act of encouragement to the Slovak people in the religious and national spheres, and these facts touch on an environment that goes beyond the ecclesiastical sphere, in the context of society and culture as a whole.

In their contribution, the authors examine the issue of the origin of Slavonic literature, the Old Slavonic language, connected with the important activity of the great Slavic missionaries, Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The formation of the first state of East Slavs coincides with the adoption of Christianity and the confirmation of the word as the divine Logos. In Christian interpretation, the word gains an ontological status of God›s wisdom. The authors examine the development of the word (in terms of the language) by analysing the activities of St. Cyril as the founder of the Kiev letters. Their attention is focused on the analysis of the work of Gregory Skovoroda, Taras Hryhorovich Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka and others. Works of these writers show that the word has an archetypal character in Ukrainian culture and its symbolic structure penetrates all stages of its development. The word takes the form of an «apostolic mission», reveals and exposes the soul of the Ukrainian nation. It has Christian origin, and its cultural and historical manifestations strengthen national identity and the nation state.

The time of Cyrillo-Methodian mission belongs to the most important periods in the histories of Slavic nations. Even nowadays we can still see the fruits of the Mission. Cyrillo-Methodian values and traditions were thanks to the Benedictine monasteries continuously preserved and kept. St. Andrew-Zorard and St. Benedict belonged to most important Benedictine–eremites who lived in the territory of Great Moravia. These monks adopted Syrio-Palestinian ascetic rules of eremic life, which were mostly practised at Oriental territories, from the brothers Sts. Constantine and Methodius. The rules were brought into life as it is mentioned in the Legend of St. Maurus, a contemporary living bishop of Pécs. Places where the Benedictines lived, namely the Monastery of Saint Hypolit at Zobor hill in Nitra and Skalka near the city of Trenčín, have remained important spiritual centres to this day.
