The contribution of the Cyrillo-Methodian religious and cultural mission has been described from different perspectives and points of view. The aim of the study is to examine how the basic principles of the Thessalonian brothers’ mission are interpreted and how they are experienced and updated in the current religiosity and cultural tradition. In our study, we focus on current trends that appear in today’s religiosity survival which are based on the results of the research carried out in 2020, related to the prospects of development of religiosity in Slovakia. From a methodological point of view, the text compares the underlying principles of religiosity, which are integrated in the teachings of Cyril and Methodius with current trends and ideas of the younger generation about their own religiosity. The aim of the study is to determine whether in the scenarios of the development of religiosity we find the presence of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition and how they are transformed in the current conditions.

Present paper attempts to scrutinize the 18th-century interpretational debates between the Slovak and Hungarian proto-nationalist circles and persons about the Great Moravian past and about the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition. The article does not intend to introduce the contradicting historical narratives in detail, or analyse the righteousness of stances in light of later research results, but to focus on a special dimension of these disputes: i.e. how emotional and intellectual motives could play a role in the evolvement of identity debates. The conceptual framework of the research is that beside clear interest-motives (including personal or collective interests, as struggle for prestige or position), the feeling of being hurt by “untrue” statements could also bolster personal identification processes and inter-ethnic boundary-making processes. The paper’s general contribution to identity studies and conflict studies is that – beside interest-based motives, like struggle for power and (personal or collective) domination – emotional and cognitive motives are also relevant in nation-building, while their strong interrelatedness seems to be also evident. Methodologically, the early Slovak-Hungarian debates on Great Moravia, Svatopluk or on the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition – despite the scarcity of sources – seems to be a suitable research terrain due to the lack of institutionalized structures of nationalization; hence, bottom-up identification and boundary-making processes might be easier to detect than in later ages.

The paper focuses on the significance of the Cyrillo-Methodian cult and it is based on the findings of the long-term research. It deals with the diffusion and maintenance of cultural heritage of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in modern Slovak history. One of the aims of the paper is to study the impact of the Cyrillo-Methodian cult within a wider context of religiosity of social groups and classes in Slovakia. It presents some specific features of the cult of Ss. Cyril and Methodius and their disciples in Slovakia, and highlights the impact of the current church-political situation on the growth of the cult and its influence on political, church and other professional institutions. Synchronic and diachronic approach used in interdisciplinary research allowed a complex view on the spread of the cult in specific historical periods in Slovakia. Historical analysis is followed by the author’s reflections on how the Cyrillo-Methodian cultural heritage relates to the religious ethical level. The Solun brothers’ mission emphasised piety (and a religious worldview per se) typical for the eastern religiosity. The study tries to define several aspects of the brothers’ work; especially those which deal with the growth of the spiritual essence of the society. As the Second Vatican Council and the documents of Pope John Paul II show, these issues remain topical and inspiring even today.

The study deals with the hitherto comprehensively unprocessed topic of the central Cyrillo-Methodian festivities in Slovakia. This is one of the aspects of the development of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in Slovakia after 1918. The Cyrillo-Methodian cult was less pronounced than would be expected. The festivities were organized at first in Ružomberok and then in Devín. The tradition of the festivities was formed in a confessional and ethnically diverse environment. Despite the changes in political regimes and states, the festivities have survived until the present.

In the paper we identify and focus on literary reflection of the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy in the literature for children and youth in the pre-artistic, or more narrowly, Matica period. We consider the works from the context of (non-intentional → intentional) literature for children and youth, which are/form part of literature of the Matica period connected with the foundation and activity of Matica slovenská. In terms of motifs and themes, the selected poetic texts from the investigated works are connected with the life and work of apostles Cyril and Methodius or emphasize the importance of their mission in the Great Moravian environment to the Slovak nation. We focus on Ján Levoslav Bella’s (Poludničan’s) poem Ku vzkrieseniu Cyrilla (On Cyril’s Resurrection), published in Cyril a Method – Katolícke Noviny pre Cirkev a Dom (Cyril and Methodius - Catholic News for Church and Home), a period newspaper, and on poems that can be classified as important poetic works from the context of literature for children and youth in the Matica years. These include the collection by Ján Levoslav Bella, Andrej Method Čerňanský and Janko Slávoľub Kršák Jarnie kvety (1863, Spring Flowers), which contain poems Lipa (Linden), Kde ja bývam? (Where do I reside?); and František Otto Matzenauer’s anthology Malý rečník (1873, Little Speaker), which contain poems by J. E. Dobrucký Vlasť (Homeland), J. Mičátek Oj Slovensko! (Oh Slovakia!), M. Pohronský Žiaľ nad Devínom (Sorrow above Devín) and the national song Nitra.

The article attempts to trace inspirations by the culture of pre-Mongolian Rus’ in the works of father Pavel Florensky (1882-1937), a prominent philosopher of the Russian religious renaissance of the early XXth century. Relying upon Florensky’s writings, Old Russian literary artefacts and scholarly findings of medievalists (mainly art historians and philologists), the author seeks to highlight an important, albeit somewhat forgotten, source of Florensky’s philosophical teaching - the Christian cultural tradition of Old Rus’. Apparently, it is this tradition that played an essential role in Florensky’s development into an original philosopher, shaping fundamentals of the metaphysics of All-Unity which has been recognized as Florensky’s main philosophical achievement.

The spread of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition throughout the district of Považská Bystrica is associated with Štefan Závodník, a Roman Catholic priest and national revivalist who worked in the village of Pružina. Thanks to his enthusiasm and intense activity the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition had already been established in the part of the district of Považská Bystrica by the late of the 19th century. Due to the influence of his ideas the tradition spread also to nearby parishes in the early of the 20th century. The paper outlines the importance of Štefan Závodník’s influence on the dissemination of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in the Považská Bystrica district in the 19th and 20th century.

Cantus Catholici (1655) was the first printed Slovak Catholic hymn book. In the foreword, its compiler, the Jesuit Benedikt Szőllősi, refers to the Cyrillo-Methodian mission which proves the mission’s importance for the development of Slovak national identity. Even in the Baroque period, the authorization of the use of the Slavonic liturgy by Pope Adrian II was an accepted argument to support the creation of a “folk” hymn book. Ancient ancestry of religious songs, their popularity among people and their use in non-sacral space were emphasized. The compiler of the hymn book Cantus Catholici approached the selection and modification of songs in a specific way. The fact that the hymn book was addressed to the folk influenced the process of selecting songs which were well-known and popular (Christmas songs, Easter songs, songs for Lent, etc.). The songs had to be faithful to the creed and authentic in terms of their historicity and popularity among people on the territory of modern Slovakia. In his foreword, Benedikt Szőllősi highlights the idea of shared Slavic integrity and unity, and considering territorial and historical criteria, his selection gives strong preference to the Czech context. One of the sources of inspiration for Szőllősi’s work was an older hymn book Písně katolické [Catholic songs] (1622) compiled by Jiřík Hlohovský and published in Olomouc. Studied hymn books – Slovak Cantus Catholici and Czech Písně katolické [Catholic songs] – come from different national and cultural milieus. They both have shaped and added to the richness of European baroque cantional heritage. Their comparison shows that the Czech hymn book Písně katolické [Catholic songs] by Hlohovský was one of the main sources for the Slovak hymn book, although their interconnectedness was creative and original.

The study focuses on the Cyrillo-Methodian references in literature for children and young adults of the pre-artistic period. The works are studied within the context of (non-intentional → intentional) literature for children and young adults which are part of Enlightenment educational literature and literature of the Matica Slovenská period, seeking the thematic connections with the life and work of missionaries Cyril and Methodius and finding out how the editors of the works connected the texts with the Great Moravian period (for example in note-taking apparatus). The most important works of Enlightenment educational literature are studied (Čítanka, Národnie spievanky by Ján Kollár) and literature for children and young adults of the Matica Slovenská period (Slovenská čítanka by Emil Černý). Literature for children and young adult of the Štúr period is also considered, since according to O. Sliacky (2013), the members of the Štúr’s circle authorized Emil Černý to arrange a literary anthology which contained literary texts from the Romantic period.
