The Sillon was a  French Catholic lay youth movement which, from 1899 to 1910, worked on building a  democratic community anchored on Christian values. The purpose of my essay is to analyze how this aim, inspired by the apologetics of Maurice Blondel, took form in Sillonist literary theory and fiction: in the Sillonists’ wish to create a  popular art and in the preference they gave to psychological realism. My analysis is based on the movement’s journal and on a  novel by Henry du Roure, Life of a  Happy Man.

Italian social-political Catholicism in both its ideological and organistional dimensions, as it was in most European countries in the 19th century, originated and initially developed in opposition towards the philosophy of Enlightenment as well as the principles of the year 1789. One of the most important issues for Italian Catholic social-political movement and thought was the “Roman question,” which was the implication of the Risorgimento (“Rising Again”). Italian Catholic social–political thought was originally influenced by traditionalists, integrists, ultramontans and monarchists but later — when threatened by socialism and the “social question” — it became much more open to social conceptions combined with the ideas of democracy, social justice and equality, subsidiarity and common good, which were also to be implemented in the international field.

In the paper I present the vision of a relation between the state and religious denominations and the status of atheists and free-thinkers delineated in the political thought of the Christian Social Party (Christlichsoziale Partei), active in Austria-Hungary and the First Republic of Austria, Christian-democratic, after 1931 influenced by Italian fascism and inclining towards authoritarianism. I infer it from its propaganda materials (books, brochures, press articles, leaflets, posters) and legislation enacted under its governmentI also show the impact of the social, cultural and political context on the postulates of the Christian Social Party with regard to religious policy.

The article is dedicated to the origins and development of the Italian socio-political Catholic movement before 1919. It analyses the implications of the ideological-political conflict between the Church and the State (mainly the so-called “Roman question” — the problem of temporal Pope’s power, and the non expedit principle which did not allow Italian Catholics to participate in parliamentary elections) in the context of the Risorgimento that is the movement for and process of national and political unification of Italy. The text not only presents the birth and functioning of particular Catholic organisations but also clarifies the origins and nature of the divisions in the Italian Catholic camp until 1919 when the first modern Christian democratic political party — Italian Popular Party — was established.

Idzi Radziszewski’s activity in St. Petersburg during his fouryear term as rector of the Spiritual Academy was multilateral. The Rector became involved in pastoral activities, conducting retreats and preachingin St. Petersburg parishes. He was also active in charitable and aid organizations. The main sphere of activity was the education of the clergy and lay youth. Radziszewski, shortly after his arrival in the Russian capital, developed a project to reform the Spiritual Academy, emphasizing the improvement of the level of studies and specializations. In the situation of constant ministerial supervision, the reform was limited in scope, hence not all projects were implemented by the Rector. The establishment of the Higher Polish Courses gave the rector a new impulse to create a university whose graduates will build an independent state on Christian foundations. Recognizing the need for the formation of both priests and laity, Fr. Radziszewski was also involved in the work of the Social Council at the Ordinariate of the Mogilev Archdiocese. The preserved documentation of this activity allows us to outline the unchanging attitude of Fr. Radziszewski – action towards the common good.

Działalność ks. Idziego Radziszewskiego w Petersburgu w ciągu jego czteroletniej kadencji na stanowisku rektora Akademii Duchownej była wielostronna. Ks. Rektor zaangażował się w działalność duszpasterską, prowadząc rekolekcje i głosząc kazania w petersburskich parafiach. Działał także w organizacjach o charakterze charytatywnymi pomocowym. Główną zaś sferą aktywności było kształcenie duchowieństwa i młodzieży świeckiej. Ks. Powołanie do życia WyższychKursów Polskich dało zaś Rektorowi nowy impuls do tworzenia uczelni, której absolwenci będą budować niezawisłe państwo na chrześcijańskich podwalinach.
