The subject matter of this article is the episode of Skarga’s creations, concerning the argument with a protestant writer and publisher, Daniel Cramer. The conflict referred to the speech made by the Jesuit, just before the war expedition of King Sigismund III Vasa which started in Inflants. The essence of the speech was subsequently translated into German by an anonymous translator, a witness of this event. Furthermore, it was published as a maligning source against the king’s preacher. As a response, Skarga had created his own written version of the speech, in such a form in which it was originally meant to be spoken. Afterwards he compared it to the German-language translation. By juxtaposing those two texts, he wanted to show in what way the opponents, in his opinion, manipulated the written forms of the facts. In addition, his objective was to restore the basic philological processes, which was conducted during the modification of his speech.

The purpose of this article is to present the protocol from the inspection visit at the Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in 1706 during a general visitation of the Diocese of Chełmno commissioned by Bishop Teodor Andrzej Potocki. So far, this source has been scarcely used in research on Toruń Cathedral, and the information it contains can be used to study the most diverse areas of sciences of history, especially art, bibliology and material culture of the Counter-Reformation era. It constitutes a supplement to earlier protocols that had been published in print, and made during inspection visits ordered by Bishops Andrzej Leszczyński (1647) and Andrzej Olszowski (1667–1672). The document provides a detailed enumeration of the liturgical vessels and vasa non sacra, including silver figurines that contain fragments of relics, which were more numerous than previously thought. The inspector also listed different paraments (e.g. vestments and dalmatics) and the contents of the parish library, which, in addition to papal decrees, canonical literature and popular sermon collections, included works by secular thinkers, including Aristotle, Boethius and Cicero.

The article presents ways of using motives related to family matters in Old Polish documents written by catholic and Protestant polemicists in both metaphorical and reality oriented content. As the analysed materials shows it was a common practice to use family related motives in religious polemics and to describe real or fictitious pathological phenomena. However, there is no a positive vision of marriage and family in the discussed polemic works. Recalling phenomena unacceptable for the society of that period was aimed at creating a proper image of a religious opponent. However, it led to significant simplification of theological argumentation.

The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 61, issue 2 (2013). The article addresses the question of the fall of the Latin parish in Chorupnik that belonged to the former diocese of Chełm. The parish church in Chorupnik was taken over by Protestants in the second half of the 16th century. Unsuccessful attempts at recovering its property were made by incorporating it into the neighbouring parish in Gorzków. The actions taken by the Gorzków parish priest and the bishop together with his chapter failed, too. A detailed study of such attempts to recover the property of one of the parishes that ceased to exist during the Reformation falls within the context of the relations between the nobility and the clergy in the period of Counter-Reformation. Studying the social, legal and economic relations in a local dimension is important for understanding the mechanisms of the mass transition of the nobility to reformed denominations, and then of their return to the Catholic Church.

The subjects of the article are genesis and history of the Reformation in the writings of Piotr Skarga, most fully shown in his polemics with Hieronim Moskorzowski, specifically in the first “Abashment of the Arians” (1604). An argument with Arian writer is crucial for mentioned issues, because the Royal Preacher derived all factions of the Reformation from one ancestor — Arius. Skarga was relying his historical narration on the marks of the True Church (“via notarum”). He was convincing that not having any of those marks had direct influence on shaping and existence of the Reformation. An author in his writings therefore was undertaking an issue of history of the heterodox communities, with intention to present it in the specific historiosophical perspective.

The article presents a report on the relations between the three main religious groups of Gdańsk: Lutherans, Catholics and Calvinists in the period of the first three centuries after the proclamation of Martin Luther’s theses in Wittenberg (1517). The report includesthe periods of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (until 1793), Napoleonic epoch (1807-1814) and first years of the Prussian partition (until 1817). At that time the Lutherans were the dominant religious group in Gdańsk, but they failed to take the total control of the city. The Catholics lost their precedence soon after the Reformation, but they increased their number until the beginning of the 19th century and strengthened social and cultural influences at that time. The Calvinists were the biggest losers in that confrontation, because they didnot manage to dominate the city (at the turn of 16th and 17th centuries), lost believers and finally were subordinated to the Lutherans within the Evangelical Union (1817). The religions under discussion sometimes formed alliances, but it was not always the alliance between both groups of Protestants. Especially during the expansion of Calvinism in the city, the Lutherans looked for help from the Catholics and sometimes the latter provided them a real support.

The article presents the main directions of the “strategy” of the Orthodox and Protestant dialogue and cooperation in the Ruthenian territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries). This cooperation was undertaken too late. It took place at the time of the predominance of the counter-reformation camp in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It had therefore an ad hoc character. At the same time, it was severely criticized. Describing the image of the Orthodox and Protestant cooperation inspired by political problems should be separated from strictly theological issues.

The article aims at showing in a new light the confessional situation of the University of Cracow in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, using sources omitted in previous research into the topic and thanks to a more detailed analysis of the sources used by other scholars (e.g., Acta rectoralia, university conclusions, rectors’ and professors’ diaries). The Academy of Cracow (as it was called then) was a Catholic institution, thus portraying the attitude of the university’s authorities to non-Catholics in a period of confessional struggle in Cracow and in the Commonwealth seemed promising. Another point was to analyse the possibilities for non-Catholics to function within the walls of the University in different periods of time, as well as to describe the most important events and regulations, which influenced the University’s policy. The author also tried to bring to light the subsequent stages of administrative exclusion (on various levels) of non-Catholic students. However, the contacts of the Academy with religious minorities in Cracow is a matter so complex, that it remained beyond the scope of the article.

The dissertation raises the question of how particular articles of the Creed were presented in three Polish Catholic catechisms of the 16th century, written (and published) in Polish language by: Benedykt Herbest (1531-1598), Marcin Białobrzeski (1530-1586), and Hieronim Powodowski (1543-1613). The catechisms were created as a response to their Protestant equivalents, written by Martin Luther, Zacharias Ursinus, Caspar Olevianus, John Calvin, and Martin Bucer. Analysis of differences and similarities in interpreting the meaning of the 12 articles of the Creed in the above-mentioned Polish Catholic catechisms shows that they have symbolic value, and that their meaning was differently interpreted by the Polish authors. In the catechisms written by Herbest, Białobrzeski and Powodowski, chapters relating to the Creed clearly and accessibly explained the truths of the Holy Scripture, facilitated understanding of the Bible and preparation for sacraments, showed how to build one’s relationship with God, helped to resolve doubts, and brought order into one’s faith. Doubtlessly, the catechisms became a valuable tool for clergy in their pastoral work and a support for priests administering sacraments. They also implemented the decisions of the Council of Trent concerning the main dogmas of Catholic faith.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth chapters of the second book of his De Controversiis, the Italian Jesuit and Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542 to 1621) presents his opinion on three questions concerning vernacular translations of Scripture. The main question which determines the structure of both chapters is whether vernacular translations of Scripture should be used in liturgy. Bellarmine’s answer is negative: the three traditional languages, Hebrew, Greek and Latin, should be reserved for liturgy. In relation to this, he indicates the solution of two more questions: whether the sacred text may be translated into vernacular languages and whether vernacular translations of Scripture can be used for private reading. He answers the first question positively but in the answer to the second question he emphasizes that Scripture should be read only by those who are mature enough in this respect. Within the positive-historical argumentation, some examples from Czech history also appear: the use of the Slavonic liturgy in the Great Moravia and the Pope’s approval of this liturgy, the prohibition of Slavonic liturgy in Bohemia, authorized by Pope Gregory VII in 1080, and the role of vernacular translation of Scripture in the Hussite movement in the first half of the 15th century. Bellarmine is also acquainted with the opinion that St. Jerome translated Scripture into Slavonic language. He expresses his doubts about this conjecture and he points out that neither Jerome himself nor any other ancient writer mentions this translation. Bellarmine’s sources of knowledge about the events of the Czech and Slavic history are especially Examen Concilii Tridentini by the German Lutheran theologian Martin Chemnitz and Historia Bohemica by the Italian humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini.

The article discusses the theme of death, flesh and body of sinners, heretics and the damned, according to Church. It analyses selected works by Jacobus de Voragine, Klemens Boleslawiusz (1625–1689), Józef Baka (1707–1780), Jan Chądzyński (17th century) and Jan Zrzenczycki (16/17th century). In particular, the analysis focuses on the differences between these texts in depicting flesh and the moment of death of the main characters. As a result, it is possible to point out the fixed motifs and the styles of describing on the damned flesh. The analysis is based on the historical and literary research on flesh and corporeality.

Theatrum virtutum Divi Stanislai Hosii (Rome, 1588), an emblematic work by Tomasz Treter, is the subject of analysis aiming at diagnostic indication of its two dimensions, namely those related to emblems and panegyrics. Comparing apologias of one of the most significant persons in the Catholic church and merely moderate results of Hosius’ combats against evangelists in his diocese (first in the Bishopric of Culm, then diocese of Warmia) allows to call the inhibition of Counter-Reformation in Warmia only a limited success at the very most. The discrepancies between the contents of poems and chalcographies by Treter and their historical veracity reflect the scheme of allegory, which allowed even contradiction of signs and their meanings, and panegyric, with its truth about the past versus lie being fabrication or fiction.

During the Counter-Reformation issues of using the national languages in the liturgy and the rite of the church became the source of lively discussion of the representatives of the Roman Church (Catholic) and the Greek Church (Orthodox). Strategy outlined by the Council of Trent to maintain the dominance of Latin as the universal language of all Christians subordinate to Pope after the establishment of the union in Brest-on-the-Bug had to be significantly modified. The best interests of the Church consolidation required concessions on the part of Rome and recognition of the Slavonic language to be, as effective as the Latin an instrument of the saving activity of the Church. Following the Slavonic, Polish language gradually breaks into the missionary and catechetical use, which the Greek Catholics are increasingly eager to speak. The subject of this article is the phenomenon of coexistence of many languages in liturgical and administrative practice of the Latin and Russian Christians in the Republic of Poland in the 16 th -18th century and reflection on resulting from this fact preferences and translations of polemic and religious texts.

The development of Protestant communities in the Republic of Poland caused the response of Catholics. Catholic theologians conducted many theological debates, both in writing as long as disputes, usually held in churches. Both Catholic and Protestant polemicists spoke at times about the dispute itself, describing it as a quarrel with a tiresome neighbour or, directly, as a war. In this article I show that the authors I discuss referred to polemics as a war in a metaphorical and real sense. On the metaphorical level, it was a continuation of a long tradition of describing spiritual life in military terms, and on the level of physical reality, it was about linking the religious doctrine with the current socio-political reality.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Jesuits came to Twardocice in order to stop the local movement of Schwenkfelders – the supporters of the Silesian radical mystical reformer Kaspar von Schwenkfeld. In consequence, the aggressive Jesuit action led to the elimination of the religious group in the region. A chapel devoted to Holy Trinity was built in Twardocice as a symbol of the Catholic Church’s triumph. The iconographic program of a painting in the main altar could be interpreted as a reflection of the ongoing interconfessional polemic. The painting with a carefully selected Bible quotation became a theological treatise designed to proclaim the only possible way to God and to legitimize the Jesuit intervention.

Na początku XVIII wieku przedstawiciele Towarzystwa Jezusowego zostali wysłani do Twardocic w celu zahamowania rozwoju działających w okolicy schwenckfeldystów – wyznawców śląskiego odłamu radykalnie mistycyzującego protestantyzmu. Ostatecznie agresywne działania kontrreformacyjne doprowadziły do niemal całkowitej likwidacji tamtejszego ośrodka schwenckfeldyzmu. Zbudowana przez jezuitów kaplica pw. Trójcy Świętej w Twardocicach stała się symbolem zwycięskiego Kościoła Katolickiego. Program ikonograficzny obrazu ołtarza głównego świątyni można interpretować jako echo toczących się wówczas polemik międzywyznaniowych. Przedstawienie odpowiednio dobranych fragmentów z Pisma Świętego stało się swoistym traktatem teologicznym przytaczającym argumenty świadczące o istnieniu jednej możliwej drogi do Boga i słuszności kontrreformacyjnych działań jezuitów.

Many historians believe that the educational work of the Jesuits was one of the essential factors behind the failure of the Reformation movement in 16th century Poland. The article aims to depict and discuss Laurentius Bojer, a Swede who taught in Polish Jesuit schools and also garnered a considerable reputation as a Latin poet. Bojer graduated from and subsequently taught at Pontifical Seminaries which trained young people to engage in counter-reformatory work. He was also a professor at the Translators’ Seminary (Seminarium Interpretum) in Dorpat, a unique school that educated interpreters and translators who assisted Catholic missionaries and translated religious literature into Baltic languages. The portrayal of Bojer will include facts as yet unexamined in the Polish literature which the author has gleaned from archives and international studies (chiefly by the Norwegian historian Oskar Garstein). Bojer, a humanist and a writer relevant to Polish culture, will be addressed against the backdrop of the educational work of the schools he was involved with.

There are many matters in the history of Polish-English relations that have so far escaped the attention of historians dealing with this subject. Religious issues that are the subject of this article, which is the result of a monthly query in the British Library, Bodleian Library, and The National Archives of England and Wales, seem to be undervalued. The aim of the article is to present selected religious and political issues as important factors in the shaping of Polish-English diplomatic relations at the turn of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
