Dąmbska (1904–1983) distinguished in the theory of signifying silence the possible ways of searching for meanings of this phenomenon. One of them was an element of tactical action, another – an ethical category. Subsequently, Rokoszowa (1947–1997) linked this phenomenon at the linguistic level to the right of a witness, also of an accused, to remain silent. The article presents the possible meanings of the use of this right, still interpreted differently today. The examples are taken from literary and cinematographic fiction

Dąmbska (1904–1983) wyodrębniła w teorii sygnikatywnego milczenia możliwe drogi poszukiwania znaczeń dla tego zjawiska. Jedną z nich stanowił element taktycznego działania, inną kategoria etyczna. Następnie Rokoszowa (1947–1997) powiązała na poziomie językoznawczym ów fenomen z prawem świadka, a także oskarżanego, do milczenia. W artykule pokazano możliwe znaczenia wykorzystania tegoż prawa, do dzisiaj różnie interpretowanego. Przykłady zaczerpnięte zostały z beletrystyki oraz kinematografii.
