In compliance with the concepts of the National Digital Data Archives and supported by the Ministry of Informatics and Communication, the MTI - Hungarian News Agency Corporation created a database of celebrities. The objective of the project was to set up a service system based on distributed databases, hosted by the MTI and searchable via a single web interface. Data retrieval can be completed on various levels and at various costs according to user needs. The database contains data records and documents related to politicians, artists, sport personalities, scientists, economists, people who received national awards etc. The data retrieval is carried out in compliance with personal rights. In addition to MTI, three partner institutions are providing access to their collections within this initiative: the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Budapest Music Center, and the Hungarian Film Historical Photo Collection Foundation. The service offers 10 databases altogether. The URL of the service is: http://kozszereplok.mti.hu. The contents of the currently available databases are continuously enhanced and updated with new and archival records (the latter ones are being added as a result of a digitisation project). Further plans include the enhancement of the service involving more collaborating partners and their information sources.

A collection of 16th century music hymnbooks preserved in the town of Sedlcany (located in Central Bohemia) allows a detailed study on the evolution of chant repertoire and liturgy in the Czech reformation. Three Sedlcany graduals were examined by means of statistical comparison with other sources regarding their texts, melodies, feasts and the liturgical functions of the chants. The case study on the Sedlcany graduals promotes a new method of research into the repertoire of liturgical manuscripts.

Managed futures are an alternative asset class which has recently became considerably popular among investment industry. However, due to its characteristics, access to managed futures historical performance statistics is relatively confined. All available information originates from commercial and academic databases, reporting to which is entirely voluntary. This situation results in series of biases which distort the managed futures performance in the eyes of investors. The paper consists of two parts. First, the author reviews and describes various biases that influence the reliability of the managed futures indices and databases. The second section encompasses author's proposals of potential enhancements, which aim to reduce the impact of the biases in order to derive a benchmark that could better reflect characteristics of managed futures investment from the point of view of a potential investor.

The effectiveness in the protection of works of art that constituting national heritage depends on many factors. These factors include, among other things, binding legal regulations within the scope of the protection of works of art and national heritage sites, good organisation of police forces specialising in this type of activities and cooperation in this field with other state and local government institutions and the wider society. Apart from police officers’ commitment and experience, police databases that are dedicated to works of art also play an extremely important role. This article presents selected police databases devoted to works of art that are currently used by police organisations and the role of these databases in protecting national heritage in selected European Union countries. The content of the article was prepared on the basis of the analysis of literature, existing legislation and interviews with police officers and experts. The information obtained during the interviews was subjected to qualitative analysis and presented in a descriptive version.

The project MICHAELPlus was launched in summer 2006 with the participation of 14 countries. The aim of the project is to create, by June 2008, an Internet-based portal which will make it possible to access and search the metadata of digital collections of European cultural heritage from any part of the world. As the outcome of the project, valuable elements of European culture will be collected in a standard format, according to a standard data model and in a common information infrastructure. The new community standards and technical models elaborated in the framework of the initiative can be further used in future projects establishing enhanced catalogues (searchable not only by collection but also by records). The data model created in the framework of the project comprises five main units, containing information about the following: the physical and the digital collection, the institution holding the collection, the services and products connected to the collection, as well as other related programs and projects. Beside the national electronic catalogues set up on the basis of the data model, there will be an integrated portal making it possible to search digital collections of European cultural heritage provided by various member states. The Hungarian partner institution of the project is the National Digital Data Archive, operating under the umbrella of the Neumann Digital Library Directorate. The National Digital Data Archive operates and develops a record-based metadata archive, so the integration of the existing project and MICHAELPlus will generate an enhanced search interface offering access to information about the collection, the institution holding the collection and also the records contained in the collection. MICHAELPlus creates an opportunity for Hungarian cultural institutions to make a targeted appearance online, in order to better serve their user groups.

Ethno cartography has been one of the well-established ethnology methods, because it enables to know the territorial spreading of particular cultural elements and large sets thereof on one or more time levels. Through maps, it helps identify dependences, genesis, differentiation and geographic variability in phenomena of the traditional folk culture. Some of the “Ethnography” limits can be solved by the application of modern technologies – e.g. through the Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS of traditional folk culture 1750–1900 (Gistralik), developed by Masaryk University, interconnects the maps with the information from the field of traditional folk culture. The information is defined by place (historic land of Moravia) and time (1750–1900). The Gistralik represents a sophisticated GIS in the form of a database in the 3D form, that makes accessible the knowledge about documented phenomena from the field of tangible and intangible folk culture as well as about the stage of their hitherto processing. The Gistralik allows the scientists as well as others interested in the theme of cultural heritage to use a large volume of professional data that the users will explore by means of different degrees of preconditions, which enables to generate various groups of information as to their content and form.

In the first part the paper summarizes and brings the critical comments on the basic development of the Czech music lexicography. The following part outlines the conceptual, methodological and technical aspects of 'Cesky hudebni slovnik osob a instituci' (Czech Music Dictionary of Persons and Institutions; work in progress), mainly from the view of the electronic publication in the form of an open source internet database, which, in this form and extent, is used for the first time in the Czech Musicology. The other dictionary projects, in preparation by the Music lexicography department at the Institute of Musicology, Masaryk university, in the form of open-source electronic database systems, are described in the third part of the paper.

There are a number of projects for the provision of full-text digital collections in Slovenia, although the state of implementation varies from project to project. The availability of Slovene digital resources is lagging behind the availability of foreign collections. The article briefly summarises the resources that are already accessible. Some of the most important examples are COBISS, the Co-operative Online Bibliographic System & Services; SICRIS, the database on Slovenian research; the Slovenian EU database; the databases of the Chamber of Economy; the co-operative database package of several libraries with a national scope as well as various database initiatives of public libraries, publishers and journal editors. The BESEDA database of Slovene literature and literary sciences is hosted in Stockholm, Sweden.

(Polish title: Wykorzystywanie baz danych oraz czasopism elektronicznych przez pracownikow naukowych na przykladzie badan przeprowadzonych w Uniwersytecie Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy). The article discusses the problem of using digital information flow through the example of the academic research carried out among researchers of Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz in 2010. The analysis of the results shows the degree of actual use of electronic publications by faculty members and the main barriers that hinder it. This applies both to the titles published by professional and scientific publishers currently available under the national license, as well as a growing number of resources available in the global computer network via the Open Access options.
