Librarians must face new challenges in the digital age. The new roles are determined by three global trends: the reevaluation of the role of knowledge, the development in information infrastructure, and the demand for equal chances in library services. By assessing these trends it can be concluded that the librarians' profession is further differentiated along the necessary professional skills. The real divide is, however, caused by the for-profit tendency in information provision. For information specialists in the non-profit sector there are two roles that come into limelight: those of the social worker and of the information professional. One of the most important obstacle for the changed roles is the prestige deteriorating continuously, so its raise becomes a strategic task of the future.

The interviews focus on the key question whether media literacy is still in the spotlight of contemporary society. The past decades has seen rapid development of professional and academic interest in the field of media literacy. The theoretical and practical issues that have dominated the field for many years have already drawn attention to the importance of this concept for the individual and for the society. In fact, the introduction of media education in schools and other areas of public life is still being confronted with many challenges. Moreover, the wide range of related problems is becoming less in the centre stage of policy making – at the European and non-European level alike. The interviews address questions about the priorities of educational policy, which should not be focused only on the topics that can directly contribute to economic growth and job creation. Particularly today, at the times of global conflicts and societal as well as cultural transformations, it is very important to develop the critical thinking of citizens – of course, in relation to the media and their society-wide actions and agendas.

The widespread use of computer-based technologies, mostly the Internet, constitutes a new dimension in the study of virtual nationalism. The use of distance-and time-shrinking information technologies – such as social media, virtual communities and websites of nationalist groups – has changed the structure and context of nationalism as well as the scholarly discourse on related topics in the digital age. Social media enable identity expression, exploration and experimentation; phenomena that are considered natural for the human experience. It is necessary to acknowledge that there are many different factors which inspire and shape the Internet communities and interactions they make within themselves. It is essential to comprehend the motives behind these influences in order to understand the group interactions on social media platforms. In this study the authors focus on the nationalist discourse in virtual communities and on social media; mainly the opposition and resistance manifestations in the cultural and social contexts are discussed. The authors thus offer a set of theoretical outlines on the given topic and base their analysis of some nationalists’ social media posts on the inductive method of inquiry. The study also concentrates on the need to figure out the negative consequences of such social media sharing in relation to various virtual groups and general users.
