Thanks to the achievements of modern science and medicine it is possible to bring to life a child outside of the mother's body. The most popular medical techniques of artificial procreation include artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (FIVET), artificial insemination by the GIFT and ZIFT methods. The use of artificial reproduction procedures, however, involves the participation of third parties and manipulation of the human person at the earliest stage of its biological development. Artificial reproductive techniques are associated with personal destruction and dehumanization of man, society, human relations and culture. In view of the rampant “logic of relativism” it is necessary to properly show the truth about man, his dignity and recognition of the natural moral law.

Zdobycze współczesnej nauki i medycyny pozwalają powołać do życia dziecko poza organizmem matki.

The paper provides a differentiated answer to the question: Do infertile couples have a natural right to a child? The point of departure is Hans Jonas’s text entitled Rights, the Law and Ethics: How do they react to the offer of the latest reproduction techniques? published in 1986 and two key documents of the Teaching Authority of the Catholic Church: Donum vitae published in 1987 and Dignitas personae published in 2008. The newest Czech and German bioethical resources as well as, for example, the relevant Czech legal norm (statute no. 373/2011 Sb.) are also taken into account and integrated. From the point of view of natural law and in the context of the stated reference texts, the question is answered negatively. In the concluding reflection the author demonstrates the strong claim, asserted by infertile couples in the current practice of assisted reproduction, has a relevant correlate in the natural rights of the child, which must be morally respected.

Great hopes are put on stem-cells experiments, as they show new possible treatments for terminal diseases whose complete cure could only be dreamed of before. In this long and ongoing research, the ethical question must not be overlooked. This is so because progress is to be measured by the good which it provides for the well-being of humankind, both materially and spiritually. Financial profits, which are now to be expected in the field of medicine and biomedical technology, can by no means justify actions which would threaten the inviolability of human life. Every possible step should therefore be taken to ensure that the increasing knowledge base of this field is wisely deployed for the objective good of every human life.
