New layers of library services: possibilities and challenges of providing e-learning services by libraries

Information society has introduced new needs and demands towards libraries. The answer of libraries has been the development and integration of a range of new services into their existing system. When the implementation of a new service fails, the risk is that the provision of the service will be taken out of the scope of libraries. The layers of library and documentation services are supported and enhanced by the digital environment. E-learning materials also constitute a prospective new layer, but their integration and provision by libraries brings up a number of theoretical, technical and financial issues. Several libraries have reported to introduce the provision of e-learning materials, but this practice only means, in most cases, the provision of electronically stored texts free of charge or as a paying service. Thus the issues presented by the author can only be dealt with at the level of theory and cannot offer practical solutions. However, the article encompasses a broad range of issues, from the questions of unified cataloguing of metadata of e-learning materials to the creation of individual e-learning spaces for readers at libraries.

The article presents the concept, as well as a prototype of an integrated remote teaching system (ZSZN - from Polish: Zintegrowany System Zdalnego Nauczania). The integrated system incorporates synchronic and asynchronic e-learning systems and the virtual machines system. The concept of the system and the prototype lead to a single central managing system, which is linked to all the components, that use a common interface. It allows creating synchronic e-learning sessions, regulating the time of the session and also generating access codes for a session. Additionally, the lecturer has the possibility to assign access to e-learning resources and to create/manage other user's virtual machines. The article presents basic ideas of the system and its functions. The system integrates different teaching methods. It is perfect for teaching student with disabilities, allowing them to fully participate in the stationary lectures.

The idea of new means of teaching is creating the conditions for fast and permanent knowledge absorbing as well as facilitating an access to educational materials with simultaneous improving courses attractiveness. Such perspectives are offered by e-learning courses, which enable the lecturer to adjust the pace of classes to individual students needs and to prepare such material that reaches the students in an easy way. Uncontested advantage of e-education is elimination of the limits concerning the time and place of studying, which allows work at home, at the university as well as enables to participate in courses during popular international students exchange programs. E-evaluation provides an opportunity for an effective, objective and fast evaluation of high number of students. The paper presents diverse solutions applied in electronic support for didactics at the Faculty of Chemistry at Wroclaw University of Technology.

E-learning becomes one of the most popular tools for employees' development in organizations. Despite numerous advantages it offers for employers, it is not trouble-free. One of the greatest obstacles is the lack of participants' motivation for full engagement in e-learning training. The study presented in the article confirms that motivation is a factor of involvement in e-learning. The main aims of the study were: to discover the factors influencing trainee's motivation and to know their evaluation of such type of e-learning that is characterized by serial convention and a high level of interactivity.

The University of Illinois at Springfield and the Institute of Technology, Sligo Ireland are building a model of inter-institutional online class collaborations using the preview version of Google Wave. In test waves during the fall semester of 2009, the two universities joined students in a multi-week collaboration on the topic of Internet impact on energy sustainability perceptions in Europe and the U.S. The collaboration was less about the topic and more about identifying the features of the new collaboration tool that work best in facilitating student group work and instructor engagement. The results of this test will be implemented in further collaborations to be tested in a variety of disciplines by both institutions.

The paper presents an attempt to assess methods for measuring the efficiency and quality of e-learning classes conducted on the basis of the selected medical subjects at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Medical Universityof Bialystok. Presented are the most important elements that should be usedin the study of the quality and efficiency of e-learning. The effectiveness of e-learning ranged from 76% to 82% according to Kirkpatrick's model. Moreover, the e-learning method of teaching was rated by students as more convenient and easier due to continuous access to interactive learning materials.

The article provides author's conclusions on the impact of constructivism, which has been widely recognized as an approach to e-learning, on education. The author enumerates the benefits constructivism offers for education yet mostly underlines its negative implications. It is argued that the problem with constructivism is that it causes devaluation of the role of the teacher, and consequently, the loss of the aim of teaching, the appearance of the phenomenon of 'false consensous' and the students' excessive sense of relativism of knowledge.

Direct results of e-learning activity are assessed in reference to teaching quality and its costs. Whereas in the perspective of teaching quality there are different measures of didactic effectiveness used, on the financial arena there is, in turn, a range of cost effectiveness measures. Separate task is, however, defining the manner of complex measure of long-term effects of e-learning activity, in particular in relation to the adopted strategy. The article describes the application of Balanced Scorecard in e-learning, which, according to the author, provides adequate tools for the assessment of log-term effectiveness. The analysis described in the paper supports the validity of putting aims and benchmarks for e-learning activity into four basic perspectives suggested by Balanced Scorecard: financial, customer internal process and growth.

Educating teachers as a challenge for university with proliferation of computers and increased connectivity in all spheres of life, the application of e-learning in teacher development seems to be an essential method of enhancing effectiveness of practical training, as it opens up new forms of communication and collaboration in the virtual and in the real. The aim of the present paper is to seek solutions to the problems of teaching practice organisation and implementation in order to achieve higher quality, raise effectiveness and increase impact of practical preparation of students for serving their didactic and upbringing duties at schools. Special focus is placed on the innovative creation of a virtual educational space within the Moodle Learning Management System, which would be used while preparing for and serving the teaching practice, as well as while documenting the whole experience after its completion.
