METAPHOR IN THEORY AND RESEARCH

100%
EN
The aim of the study is to describe the metaphor in literature as a blend, mixture, and a new mental space created on the basis of the domains of a source and a target. Creating such blends in the individual reader’s mind has a significant effect on the construction of textual meanings and overall reception of the literary text. In the introduction, I mention several significant metaphor theories from classical, rhetoric substitution theory to current inter-disciplinary cognitive modelling of metaphoric processes. Theoretical models (especially by Fauconnier and Gentner – Smith) can be fittingly illustrated on the basis of modernist texts by the Slovak writers Ivan Horváth and František Švantner. Illustrative examples and also data from my research propose a hypothesis about creative inter linking among the metaphorical processes, the reader’s personality, and the reception of a text. From the point of view of cognitive psychology, in similarity space (of a metaphor) relational similarity and object-attribute similarity create a continuum, not a categorical dichotomy. In other words, the analysis of formal structure between a metaphorical source and a target is not enough to understand metaphorical processes. My research indicates that the domains of a source and target and their mutual relations are decisive there, thanks to their suitability to situational updates, occasional insights and possible functioning in specific discourses (individual, cultural, historical, social, political, moral, etc.).

The paper presents the selected results of research conducted by the Marketing Department of the Cracow University of Economics, which set out to understand the attitudes of both Polish companies and society towards marketing. The research on the perception of marketing was carried out mainly on the basis of 10 different statements representing both the most common and scientific views on marketing. This research confirms that the image of marketing is both complex and diversified within the surveyed population. The results constitute the basis for identifying distinct segments in each of the investigated groups. The conclusions are based on the results of two national surveys conducted in Poland in 2008 on (1) a sample of 1,128 companies operating on the Polish market and (2) a representative sample of 1,021 Poles aged 18 to 75.

The paper presents a general overview of marketing information systems applied by international companies as compared with businesses which mainly operate on their home markets. I describe the evolution of marketing information systems and present the results of empirical studies on the extent to which information technologies are applied to support marketing activities. The publication is based on the results of a Polish national survey with the use of electronic questionnaires, conducted by the Marketing Department of Cracow University of Economics from 4 July to 5 September 2008 on a random sample of 1,128 companies with Internet access.

This article presents the results of research conducted as part of a project of the Czech Ministry of Interior. Its main objective was to explore the risk level of right-wing extremism in the Czech Republic. One of the project's phases was a survey (n = 2056, population of people older than 15 years, probabilistic sampling). Through face-to-face interviews, we discovered that 2.5 % of inhabitants in the Czech Republic go along with the ideas of the ultra-right wing and are also willing to support radical political parties in elections. The percentage of people who support ideas typical for right-wing extremism and moreover are willing to publically support political parties which offer radical solutions (through participation in right-wing demonstrations, or by helping with the organization of their events) reaches 6 %. Our research shows that the main risk (from the point of view of the combat against right-wing extremism) represents the latter group. The research also reveals that the sources of extremism are multiple and that this phenomenon encompasses macro-social as well as micro-social issues. From the macro-social point of view, it is possible to point to influences like unemployment, the level of education, the atmosphere in the society, the individual's ability to integrate and reach his/her goals etc. In the micro-sociological frame of the reference, it was found that extremism is influenced, for example, by satisfaction with family relationships, ability for self-realization, material provision, and the extent of personal experience with minorities and foreigners. Some psychological and socio-psychological factors apply as well (e.g. temperament, stereotypes and prejudices).

Recent studies on social solidarity have been concentrated either on the theoretical exploration of the phenomenon or on the investigation of solidarity aspects in empirical studies of little social groups. The paper presents a theory of social solidarity and a measurement instrument to study the phenomenon on the general level of Ukrainian society. The authoress provides the description of methodic issues as well as analysis strategy and interpretation framework. Based on the data provided by Institute of Sociology in Kiev, three different indices are computed to describe normative and structural aspects of social solidarity. Using structural equation modeling the relationships between concepts of the theory are specified and explained.

This article addresses the issue of empirical research on language attitudes. In the first part, some of the up-to-date investigations of attitudes towards Czech are discussed. The second part introduces the matched-guise technique to Czech linguistics and points out some examples of how this technique has been used and modified. Criticism of this technique is mentioned briefly. In the third part, the possibilities of implementing the matched-guise technique using Czech material are considered (e.g. the difference in the evaluation of different items of one variety; the difference in the evaluation in different situational contexts; language attitudes and code-mixing/code-switching in Czech; the issue of language discrimination).

This article represents an excursion into the history of sociology and into the history of empirical sociological research. It looks at four outcomes of collaboration between Paul F. Lazarsfeld and Robert K. Merton. All of them draw on a combination of empirical research and sociological theory, and all of them were of significance for the cooperation between Merton and Lazarsfeld. First, they developed a pair of methodological tools: the programme analyser and the focused interview, and they created a functional model for the combined use of these two devices in research. Next, they co-edited a monograph titled Continuities in Social Research, in which they presented the results of the ‘American Soldier’ study and explained its contribution to the development of sociological theory and research methodology. Merton was a theorist and Lazarsfeld an empirically oriented scientist and the fruits of this kind of collaboration are apparent in their joint article ‘Friendship as a Social Process’. The fourth example of their cooperation occurred with their efforts to assert Lazarsfeld’s idea for a centre for advanced training in social research that would focus on research training. The complementary roles that Lazarsfeld and Merton played are illuminated further by the memoirs of these two scholars, which reflect on their collaborative research work.

The monograph introduces the reader to the psychology of religion through the work of Antoine Vergote, a theoretician who has influenced the development of this discipline in Europe in fundamental ways for several decades. Behind the iron curtain, the importance of a psychology of religion was suppressed and its cultivation banished from the scope of research. On the solid basis of his lifework and of his psychoanalytically oriented pioneering research, Vergote now presents the Hungarian reader with empirical methods of studying various cases, his preliminary considerations, and the results of his investigations supported by his insight into several disciplines. Vergote approaches definitions, symbols, and rituals from a wide theoretical foundation making use of different fields such as psychology, theology, and a religiously based and practically oriented pedagogy. While the author has developed a system of criteria to distinguish between healthy and pathological forms of religious practices, he points out that the adequate training of the practitioner is key to a successful treatment. Vergote's works are now an indispensable resource for any research in the field connecting psychology and theology.

In the first issue of the methodological journal ASP, initially published in 1995, the authors H. Domanski, Z. Sawinski, F. Sztabinski and P.B. Sztabinski outlined probable directions of the development of sociological research in Poland. The present article aims at juxtaposing the predictions with 15 years of research practice. The undertaken issues concern the development of research into public opinions, marketing research, international comparative research, new data collection techniques (CATI, CAWI) and social data archives. Following proper analyses, the article proves the correctness of many of the predictions. It is also stated that the greatest changes were connected with marketing and opinion research as well as the application of new information technologies in research along with the running of international projects.

Knowledge society faces the challenges to the universalization of education. A changeover from massification to universalization of education brings new views on the role and functions of education, and of course, on the contents of knowledge mediated by a tertiary education system. The number of university educated students in the Czech Republic is increasing very quickly. The percentage of university graduates on the labour market is growing rapidly. Competitive environment on the Czech labour market is tougher than it used to be. The competition between universities is going up, especially in the private sector of tertiary education. The current number of private universities becomes untenable considering the decreasing number of potential applicants caused by the negative demographic movements of age structure of population. Success in stiff competitive environment of universities means consistent strategic leadership of schools and precise conceptions of marketing campaigns. These campaigns should include marketing statements based on facts, rational arguments and objective information. The useful basis for these statements could be empirical data of social profiles of our own students and competitive students’ population as well. The sociological research of social profiles of graduated students may serve not only as a material for credible and effective promotion of schools, but also as a rational starting point of the increasing educational level of schools.
