The article presents the origins and nature of the management of individual competencies. The differences between the classical approach to human resource management and competence management are discussed. An overview is provided of the various conceptions of the function of competence management in the subject literature. The author’s perspective on the functions of competence management and the measures realised within the framework of each of those functions is presented. The final part examines potential limitations to the implementation of competence management in an organisation.
