This paper outlines the theoretical conceptualization of women's empowerment by feminist thought and discusses practical aspects concerning the implementation of this principle into various gender equality programs and concepts and the development discourse. The text begins with a discussion of feminist re-conceptualization of the term empowerment. This concept was adopted by feminism as a principle of understanding women as actors of change, as it represents a process of shifting from a passive state towards an active state of control over material and intellectual resources. Empowerment is interpreted as a contextual category, while empowerment patterns are not transferable to different conditions. Hence, its generalization decreases its political potential. The text further discusses women's empowerment as a concept adopted by feminist activists from 'South' in connection with their criticism of Western feminism. Finally, the text offers an overview of selected women's empowerment initiatives.

Recent years clearly show a rising interest in methods for managing human resources that may help increase the input of workers in the success of the organization as well as make possible full access to 'hidden resources' of knowledge, creativity, and worker initiative (Thompson, 1999). A concept that seems to bring in a wealth of input into the discussed question is the empowerment of workers. This article discusses the idea of empowerment, its basic definitions, and the scope of its variety of concepts. The results of empirical studies thanks to which new dimensions of worker empowerment have been identified are also presented.

The authoress' aim is to describe and interpret the connection between media literacy and critical pedagogy which appear in the works of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Henry Giroux. Much attention is paid to issues, such as symbolic and iconic violence, critical analysis, empowerment, cultural reproduction, the main interests of media literacy, and the problem of using popular culture and media study in the pedagogical process. She considers the special status of media images and the problem of the degree to which they correspond with reality, the process of decoding cultural texts and the role of audiovisual competence. The authoress presents the most important views concerning the pragmatics of media images and their influences on social life, and the difference between critical and non-critical pedagogy in the context of cultural reproduction, and symbolic violence in the communication process.
