The disciplines increasingly organize knowledge, but according to Lukács and Adorno, the essay represents a continuing need for an intersection of disciplinary knowledge and the totality of experience. According to Foucault, the essays of Montaigne and Bacon embody the transition from medieval commentary to modern science’s empiricism and criticalness. The essay does not submit to the systematics of science but persists in the singularity of the literary work. It interdiscursively confronts personal experience with various discursive fields and constructs a fragmentary, perspectival, and aesthetic mode of truth. Notwithstanding the literary singularity of the essay, which corresponds to Kant’s “aesthetic idea”, the genre also relies on the sensus communis. Since the 18th century, the essay has established itself in newspapers, where it has become susceptible to stereotypes and ideologies. The tension between singularity and (medial) common sense is also evident in contemporary Slovenian examples (Marjan Rožanc).

In the presented paper having the character of scientific consideration we strive for a conceptual and relational (operational) reconstruction of the Mistrík’s sense of the essay and essayistic style, which in his conception belongs to the primary, subjective-objective communication styles. We used for this purpose the triangulation method used to determine the position of 3D objects in geodesy and cartography. Based on a critical reflection of relatively well-known facts and statements about the essayistic style, we gradually set aside the triangulation points of Mistrík’s model of essay and update it about the current language situation, ergo situation in stylistics significantly influenced by digital and multimedia communication tools. We document our findings with text fragments from older and also contemporary essayistic texts.

The paper deals with the aspects of the genre of the essay titled Rozhovory o juhoslovanských Slovákoch /Dialogues about Yugoslavian Slovaks by Andrej Mráz in the context of research into literature written in the interwar period. The goal of the paper is to present the invariant elements and the special features of Mráz´s essay as well as to show how inspiring it is in the present. The paper builds on the fundamental studies on essay as a genre by A. Bagin, R. Chmel, P. Valček, M. Horváth as well as the assessment of Andrej Mráz´s literary work by A. Matuška, K. Rosenubaum, V. Petrík, O. Čepan. Mráz´s essay deserves attention in the context of updating the inter-literary dialogue between Slovakia and Yugoslavia, i.e. Vojvodina. In relation to that the paper shows the special features of Mráz´s genre form within the history of the genre in Slovakia. The essay-like elements are also contained in less extensive articles by A. Mráz dedicated to the subject. The bibliography of the works by Andrej Mráz compiled in 1964 is extended by a list of his writings published in Yugoslavian magazines. The essay is considered to be inspiring in the context of developing the Slovak – Vojvodina inter-literary relations. What is also stimulating is Mráz´s critical attitude to the efforts to gain a more objective understanding of ourselves and the others.
