WOMEN IN POWER ÉLITE OF THE ETHIOPIAN EMPIRE

100%
EN
In Ethiopia's history there was only one woman who ruled as an empress, i.e. in her own right: Zewditu. However, other state functions in the empire were often performed by women and some were meant to be performed only by them. Formal female contribution in ruling the country was significant and culturally conditioned, hence in studying history of Ethiopia one comes across a number of respected female rulers. The scope of this article is to give some examples of those women who officially participated in ruling the country and trace those aspects of Ethiopian tradition which gave ground for females to rule on different levels of the empire's administration. It also discusses the tools of power which were available for Ethiopian ladies.
