The purpose of the presented text is to analyze the forms of manifestation of local identity of migrants from the Podkarpacie region in the United States, using selected localities of the region as an example. The research was based on existing data (mainly censuses, personal documents, newspapers, passenger arrival records from the Ellis Island Archives) and elicited data (in-depth interviews). The exploration covered two neighboring counties: Strzyzow (nineteen villages) and Rzeszow (primarily Rzeszow and Harta). Examples of different ways of demonstrating local identity in the context of migration, presented in this text, clearly confirm how important an aspect it remains for the immigrant, and how crucial role it plays in the process of reconstructing identification in the destination country.

Celem prezentowanego tekstu jest analiza form manifestacji tożsamości lokalnej migrantów z województwa podkarpackiego w Stanach Zjednoczonych na przykładzie wybranych miejscowości tego regionu. Badania oparte zostały na danych zastanych (głównie spisy powszechne, dokumenty osobiste, prasa, dane pasażerów statków z Archiwum Ellis Island) oraz wywołanych (wywiady pogłębione). Eksploracja objęła dwa sąsiednie powiaty: strzyżowski (dziewiętnaście miejscowości) oraz rzeszowski (przede wszystkim Rzeszów i Harta). Przykłady różnych sposobów demonstrowania tożsamości lokalnej w kontekście migracji, zaprezentowane w niniejszym tekście, jednoznacznie potwierdzają, jak ważnym aspektem pozostaje ona dla imigranta oraz jak istotną rolę pełni w procesie rekonstrukcji identyfikacji w kraju docelowym.

Georges Perec perceives the Island of Immigrants at the banks of the Hudson River as a non- -place, a place which does not exist. It is a space which can be associated with many different meanings, referring to memory, identity, hope and despair of millions of people who came through it in order to find themselves in the dream world. The experiences of passengers who after travelling by ship were cast into the unknown world of immigrants from all over the world are still used as themes of films whose action partly takes place on the Oyster Island. The paper is an attempt at ordering the specific topography of the island and confronting it with film images. On the one hand, the island is identified with a diversity of people, languages and cultures. On the other hand, it is a locality resulting from the size and location of the island in relation to the mainland (Manhattan), and builds a kind of temporary locality of people from different parts of the world. Reference to Perec and Bober’s film Recit d’Ellis Island constructs a kind of theoretical framework for the proposed considerations of the topography of the island, being supplemented by the film Ellis by JR, as well as feature films (The Godfather 2 by Francis Ford Coppola, Brooklyn by John Crowley, and other).

Georges Perec traktuje Wyspę Imigrantów nad brzegami rzeki Hudson jako nie-miejsce, miejsce którego nie ma. Jest to przestrzeń konotująca wiele różnych znaczeń, odwołująca się do pamięci, tożsamości, nadziei i zarazem rozpaczy milionów ludzi, którzy przez nią przeszli, by znaleźć się w wymarzonym świecie. Doświadczenia pasażerów statków, a potem rzuconych na nieznany ląd imigrantów z całego świata co jakiś czas stają się tematem filmów, których akcja częściowo w ciągu całej ich pielgrzymki rozgrywa się na Wyspie Ostryg. Tekst stanowi próbę uporządkowania specyficznej topografii wyspy i skonfrontowania jej z obrazami filmowymi. Z jednej strony wyspa to przestrzeń różnorodności ludzi, języków i kultur, z drugiej zaś tworzy lokalność wynikającą z rozmiaru i położenia wyspy względem stałego lądu (Manhattanu) oraz buduje tymczasową swoistą lokalność grup ludzi pochodzących z różnych zakątków świata. Odniesienie do filmu Pereca i Bobera Opowieści z Ellis Island konstruuje rodzaj ramy o charakterze teoretycznym dla zaproponowanych rozważań na temat topografii wyspy, uzupełnia je film Ellis JR oraz pełnometrażowe filmy fabularne (Ojciec Chrzestny II Francisa Forda Coppoli, Brooklyn Johna Crowleya i inne).

The article is an analysis of the values that create the American Dream in Key Island historical reportage written by Malgorzata Szejnert. Equality, freedom and success were the hallmarks of New World, attracting millions of Europeans at the turn of the century. Most of them went to Ellis Island, where the immigration center was. The selection of immigrants, the limitations of their freedom, and their ambivalent successes illustrate, how unrealistic were the American ideals of democracy. The article acknowledges Ellis Island as the „site of memory” in the sense given by Pierre Nora

Artykuł stanowi analizę wartości tworzących amerykański mit w reportażu historycznym Małgorzaty Szejnert Wyspa klucz. Równość, wolność i sukces, z których słynął Nowy Świat, przyciągały miliony Europejczyków za ocean na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Większość z nich przeszła kontrolę na Ellis Island, gdzie znajdowało się centrum imigracyjne. Reportaż, prezentując różne wymiary selekcji imigrantów, ograniczenia ich wolności oraz ambiwalentne sukcesy, obrazuje, jak nieprzystający do rzeczywistości był amerykański ideał demokracji. Artykuł uznaje Ellis Island za tzw. miejsce pamięci w rozumieniu, jakie nadał temu pojęciu Pierre Nora.
