W latach 30. XX w., po wstrząsie, jaki wywołał wielki kryzys, realizm ponownie stał się popularną tendencją w polskiej kulturze. Twórczość zespołu literackiego „Przedmieście”, seria reportaży publikowanych na łamach „Wiadomości Literackich” czy powieści środowiskowe zwracały uwagę opinii publicznej na te rejony życia, które do tej pory spychane były na margines. Wychodząc naprzeciw upodobaniom widzów, filmowcy adaptowali tematy z codziennej rzeczywistości, łącząc je z konwencją melodramatu. Jednym z najszerzej dyskutowanych tematów w tym okresie była emancypacja kobiet. Zmiany dokonujące się w tej sferze życia były częstymi elementami polskich filmów lat 30. Analiza związków fabuł z rzeczywistością i tematami obecnymi w debacie publicznej pozwala na przyjrzenie się takim aspektom funkcjonowania ówczesnego społeczeństwa, jak prawodawstwo, stosunki społeczne, sytuacja ekonomiczna i obyczajowość.

In the 1930s, following the upheaval caused by the great depression, realism became a popular trend in Polish culture. The work of the literary group “Przedmieście” [“The Suburb”], a series of reports published in “Wiadomości Literackie” [“Literary News”] or literary novels drew public attention to these areas of life, which until now have been pushed out to the margins. To please the viewers filmmakers adapted themes from everyday life, combining them with the convention of melodrama. One of the most widely discussed topics in this period was the emancipation of women. The changes in this sphere of life frequently featured in Polish films of the 1930s. The analysis of the links between the storylines and reality, and the topics of public debate, permits one to consider such aspects of society of the time as legislation, social relations, the economic situation and customs.
