The aim of the article is to present the profile of Bolesław Kominek, who played a significant role in the work of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate and its specialist committees. Formally, since 1954 he was a member of ECP, but participated in meetings since the end of 1956. The research problem is to characterise his activity, which included several areas of action: the preparation of pastoral letters, addresses and pastoral words; participation in the formation of relations with the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic; contribution to regulating the status of the Catholic Church in the Western and Northern Lands; study work related to the reorganization of the structures of the Polish ecclesial administration; contacts with the Holy See; episcopal conferences and participation in Vatican gatherings. An important part of his engagement at the Episcopal Conference of Poland was work in specialist committees. During his twenty years of ministry, Bishop Bolesław Kominek was a member of the following bodies: The Pastoral Commission/General Pastoral Ministry of the Episcopate of Poland – President from 1958 to 1974; Commission Iustitia et Pax of the Episcopate of Poland – ecclesial assistant and chairman from 1968 to 1974; Commission for the Church in the Western and Northern Lands of the Episcopate of Poland – President from 1970 to 1972; Commission for Christian Charity/Charitable Ministry of the Episcopate of Poland – member from 1958 to 1967; the Marian Committee of the Episcopate of Poland – member from 1958 to 1974; Polish Episcopal Council Commission – member from 1963 to 1970. The author puts forward the hypothesis that the activity of the Wrocław hierarch, rich in many initiatives, not only shows the scope of his pastoral engagement, but allows to discover the depth of Bishop Kominek’s vision of the Church, better assess his impact on post-war ecclesial reality and appreciate the role of the spokesperson of Polishness in Western and Northern Lands. The text is based on unpublished archival materials and on the basis of the literature of the subject.

The present article concentrates on the role of Archbishop Antoni Baraniak in the Polish Episcopate in the difficult period of the communist dictatorship. Despite numerous studies on the history of the Catholic Church in the People’s Republic of Poland, the steadfast bishop’s biography has not yet been written. The undertaken analysis is aimed at rectifying this lack of information on the activity of Polish bishops. The Metropolitan of Poznań became a recognized authority in the course of works on the forum of the Main Commission and the Plenary Conference of the Episcopate. He enjoyed the trust of other hierarchs, including Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, who regarded him as one of his most important collaborators, especially in the years 1957-1967 when he became the second important figure of the Polish Episcopate. For this reason, he was entrusted with the most delicate and difficult tasks, such as the preparation of the Statute of the Polish Episcopate Conference, or the chairmanship of the Commission for the clarification of charges against Bishop Czesław Kaczmarek.

Artykuł opisuję rolę abp. Antoniego Baraniaka w Episkopacie Polski w okresie komunistycznej dyktatury.

The present article describes the role of Archbishop Antoni Baraniak in the Polish Episcopate in the last decade of the metropolitan’s life. It is a continuation of the analysis published in 2019 in “Seminare”. Despite the passage of many years since the death of the steadfast bishop, his full biography still has not been written. The paper is aimed at filling this gap in the record of Polish bishops’ activity in the years 1967-1977. The Metropolitan of Poznań became known as an outstanding figure in the works on the forum of the Commission / Main Council and the Episcopal Plenary Conference. He enjoyed the trust of other hierarchs, especially that of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, being one of his most important collaborators. Archbishop Baraniak shared with the “Primate of the Millennium” a similar vision of the Church’s activity in the realities of the communist dictatorship, as well as a decisive approach to the religious policy of the authorities of the PRL. This was particularly evident in the seventies, when both hierarchs managed to see through the deceptive declarations of Edward Gierek’s political party.

Z Prymasem Tysiąclecia łączyła go wizja działalności Kościoła w realiach komunistycznej dyktatury oraz zdecydowane podejście do polityki wyznaniowej władz PRL. Było to szczególnie widoczne w latach siedemdziesiątych, gdy obaj hierarchowie nie dali się nabrać na złudne deklaracje ekipy partyjnej Edwarda Gierka.

The aim of this paper is to present the leading role of Karol Wojtyła in the work of the Episcopal Conference of Poland (ECP) in the years1958–1978. Therefore, the main research problem will be a description of Karol Wojtyła’s participation and actual influence on the activities of the Episcopal Conference of Poland, together with evaluation of the effects of his activities. The following hypotheses can be formulated. 1) Karol Wojtyła’s influence on the work of the Episcopal Conference of Poland evolved along with his changing position in the Episcopate structures (a strong trend for an increasing influence); 2) Karol Wojtyła undertook multi-faceted, multi-directional and multidimensional actions; 3) actions undertaken by Karol Wojtyła in the Episcopate of Poland significantly influenced the development of relationships between the state and the Church. The studies were conducted using the historical (genetic) method and content analyses, which allow to present the following factual data. Karol Wojtyła played an important role in work of the Episcopal Conference of Poland and its specialist committees. From 1958 (his appointment as the suffragan bishop of Krakow) he was a member of the ECP, and in 1964 (appointment as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Krakow) he joined the top management group –EP Main Commission. As part of the tasks he was appointed then, he prepared pastoral letters and participated in development of relationships with the governmen tof the Polish People’s Republic;he was also responsible for contacts with the Apostolic See and episcopal conferences abroad; and he inspired changes in the organisational structure, aims and tasks of the Episcopal Conference of Poland. His participation in the work of specialist commissionrepresented an important part of his involvement with the Episcopal Conference of Poland. During twenty years of his ministry as a bishop Karol Wojtyła was a member of the following commissions: Commission for the Lay Apostolate - chairman in 1966–1978; Sub-commission for Studies - chairman in 1967–1970; Commission for Catholic Education - chairman in 1970–1978; Science Council - chairman in 1972–1978; Commission for Christian Ministry - member in 1958–1978; Council Commission - member in 1963–1970; and Vocations Commission - member in 1967–1970. The number and the diversity of proposals, projects, and postulates notified by him prove the unique intellect, organisational skills and leadership skills of the future pope.
