This study is a paper to the history of luxury and wealth in the Czech lands. These terms are not precisely defined; they encompass subjective aspects but are also formed by socio-cultural milieu. The first part of the study is focused on their possible definitions and differences between approaches of social sciences and economics. The second part is an evolution outline of the Czech economic thought between the end of the 18th century and the second half of the 19th century; it introduces its key representatives and points out to its possibilities, problems, limits. The third part is an analysis of the first Czech economists (F. L. Rieger, F. L. Chleborad) writings; it seeks to explain their interpretation of the aforesaid terms in the Czech milieu. They were strongly influenced by the intellectual stimuli of the economic liberalism and the idea of the nation society. Although working with different premises, both authors drew similar conclusions that the process of democratization of wealth leads to the growing affluence.
